Bowie is Back

David Bowie is back with his first album in ten years. That in itself is great news but with this album comes music videos. Paul McCartney showed how classic artists can still be relevant and inventive just take a look at his Vine feed. Bowie had big shoes to fill and, naturally, he filled them.

The first video, The Stars (Are Out Tonight), stars Tilda Swinton…as…David…Bowie’s…wife. I’ll let that sink in.

It’s amazing. Two of the most androgynous people coming together as a couple and I get to watch it! For those of you who don’t know Swinton is an Oscar winning actress and recently started in Moonrise Kingdom. The video also includes models Andrej Pejic and Saskia De Brauw and features Norwegian model Iselin Steiro as a young Bowie.
The video is directed by Floria SIgismondi who worked with Bowie twice before, once in ’96 and ’97. She’s also worked with Muse, Katy Perry, The White Stripes, The Cure, Bjork, Leonard Cohen and Marilyn Manson.
The video’s story, according to Bowie, “at once captures a twenty first century moment in its convergence of age, gender and the normal/celebrity divide.” It already has critics raving. Neil McCormick from the Daily Telegraph said the video is, “teasing us with ideas of Bowie both as an aging recluse and an ageless androgynous rock star. It is the return of the master, showing every other rock and roll star, old or young, how things should be done,” he added.
Once again Bowie shows himself as a force to be reckoned with and that he hasn’t lost his artistic touch. Welcome back, Bowie.

Newsflash! Teenagers Aren’t As Crazy As You Think

Teenagers have gotten themselves a bad rep over the last few years when it comes to their mental health. Immature, obnoxious, moody, and irresponsible are just a few words I’ve heard used to describe teenagers. As a teenager myself, I know that my peers often do things differently than adults do, but the fact is, teenagers aren’t adults. According to the National Science Foundation and UCLA psychologist Adriana Galvan, there are scientific reasons for these differences (and not just lame ones like hormones and high school.)

Adriana Galvan explains:

Brett Favre: Scumbag or Just Another Sexter?

Photo of Brett Favre

As long as it doesn’t involve children, I have kind of a “live and let live” attitude regarding sexting. It’s not a big thing for me personally, but I can see how it could be pretty exciting for consenting adults. And honestly, I think it’s a lot more prevalent than most people would think on the surface.

Which is why it kind of pisses me off that Brett Favre is taking so much heat for the so-called “sexting scandal” he’s in the midst of.  Basically, Favre got caught with his virtual pants down for the sexually explicit texts and voicemails he left for sports journalist and model Jenn Sterger. News of Favre’s reportedly lewd online life, reportedly including pics of his Viking, broke last fall, and it seems like every time we turn around there’s more to, uh, see.

And the details are getting pretty …

Did Couple Temporarily Lose Custody of Newborn Because of Their Political Beliefs?

Photo of Oath Keepers Poster

Cheyenne Irish was removed from the custody of her parents when she was only 16 hours old by DCYF. This raises a whole host of questions, the most important being how compelling was the complaint leading to this action?

My gut says it had to have been pretty bad … I’ve had dealings with DCYF in my career as a teacher, and I’m at times frustrated by how slowly the wheels seem to turn. What made New Hampshire’s Johnathan Irish and Stephanie Taylor so horrible that the state removed the baby from their custody when she hadn’t even been on the earth for a full day? Even the couple that named their kid Adolf Hitler managed to hold onto him for three years …

If you give any credence to Irish and Taylor, it’s a witch hunt of sorts, with their inclusion in a group called the Oath Keepers playing a direct role in the custody issue.

While it’s kind of a moot point now, as custody of baby Cheyenne was returned to her parents after a court hearing last week, I find myself completely intrigued by this story because there are clearly a lot of puzzle pieces missing.

From WMUR:

Irish and his girlfriend said the state cited abuse and neglect claims. But Irish said officials also took the baby because they were uneasy about his involvement in a group called the Oath Keepers, which claims to uphold the constitution.

The state said it doesn’t take someone’s political views into consideration when they get involved with a family.

And, as you can imagine, the Oath Keepers are pretty pissed off themselves.

Members of the Oath Keepers protested at the courthouse and said the state unfairly used their group’s name as a reason to take custody of the child.

“People are worried that if they speak out or join some particular group that someday down the road, it could come back to haunt them or be used against them in a proceeding about their children,” said Stewart Rhodes of Oath Keepers.

Beyond the Oath Keepers part of the equation, Foster’s Daily Democrat contains some pretty specific information about why they were concerned about Baby Cheyenne’s safety.

While DCYF officials have denied that Irish’s affiliation with the Oath Keepers was a reason for taking Cheyenne away, they do make some very serious allegations against Irish and Taylor in …
