Komen Foundation’s Continued Funding of Planned Parenthood Discussion-Worthy

Susan G. Komen Logo
After an outcry from scores of angry women (my technology-challenged mother being one of them … she actually made me walk her through the steps of how to sign an online petition because she felt so strongly about it), the Susan G. Komen For the Cure foundation has done a 180 on its plan to sever ties with Planned Parenthood, and all is right with the world, right?

Not so fast …

Approximately $600,000 of the foundation’s money has been used each year to pray for breast cancer screening.  You don’t need me to tell you that screening leads to early detection, which leads to early treatment, which leads to a ridiculously high percentage of successful cures (if breast cancer is caught early enough, we are in fact talking cure, not remission).

What kind of highly public foundation makes a big thing about being “for the cure” (puts it into its very name, in fact) and then intentionally pulls money from the very demographic of women that need it most considering that they’re the least likely to get regular medical attention?

That’s got to be among the most asinine things I’ve ever heard.

And, yeah, it’s the A-word.

From The Atlantic:

Komen, the marketing juggernaut that brought the world the ubiquitous pink-ribbon campaign, says it cut off Planned Parenthood because of a newly adopted foundation rule prohibiting it from …

Drunk Babysitter Serves as a Reminder

Photo of Woman Throwing Up in a Toilet

There’s a certain feeling of safety with the knowledge that your children are home with a babysitter. After all, most parents are very cautious about the people they entrust the lives of their children with, so they have in a way earned that security blanket.

Except sometimes that’s not enough.

From WMUR:

An Exeter [New Hampshire] baby sitter has been arrested and accused of being drunk while baby-sitting, police said.

Julie Reid, 30, was charged Wednesday with six counts of endangering the welfare of a child for the incident on Sept. 9.

Police said Reid was drunk while taking care of six children, ages 3 to 12, at a home in Exeter.

One of the children called police at about 9:50 p.m. that night.

This reminds me of why I don’t leave my seven-year-old with anyone other than my parents or siblings. My tendency to inherently mistrust people is not always a good thing, but it’s times like this that I’m glad for it.

In a country where the majority of companies give piss tests to make sure that the Wal-Mart cashier isn’t toking up on off-hours and anyone working in a public …

Should A Guy Go to Jail for Giving His Girlfriend Herpes?

Poster of Herpes

When two people engage in sexual behaviors, there is a risk.  No matter how well you think you know somebody, however honest you believe someone to be in terms of their sexual history, there is a leap of faith involved.

Period.

Is that level of trust often given too easily?  Of course it is.

Does that make a person knowingly walking around with an STI keeping that information from his or her sexual partner a cad?  Absolutely.

Does it make him or her a criminal?

Well, that’s the question du jour following reports that 28-year-old David Golding of the U.K. received 14 months in prison for “inflicting grievous bodily harm” after giving his girlfriend genital herpes.

From Fox News:

The court heard Golding had denied having the infection when his then girlfriend, 24-year-old Cara Scott, was diagnosed with it soon after their relationship began in 2009. He only admitted it to her shortly before they broke up in 2010. Scott then went to the police.

According to the Daily Mail, Judge Michael Fowler said at sentencing, “‘Because it was in a relationship, it was particularly mean and an offense which amounted to a betrayal — a betrayal in a relationship in which you [Golding] professed love.

“The injury you caused her by this infection is at least or more …

The Post-Super Bowl Sexual Assault Roundup

photo of ben roethlisberger drunk pictures

Despite my lack of love for football, I was rooting for the Green Bay Packers during Sunday’s Super Bowl game. But it wasn’t because they seemed like the particularly better team (though I do love cheeseheads). No I, like many others, was so turned off by stories concerning Ben Roethlisberger and his lurid history of sexual assault that I couldn’t bring myself to root for him or the Pittsburgh Steelers. In the days that have followed, however, I’ve wondered if rooting for the Packers along the lines that they are a “better” group of individuals was particularly wise or based in fact.

In short, no. Packers players have an equally complex recent history in regards to their treatment of women; six players have been charged by two women for sexual assault. They consist of quarterback Matt Flynn, linebackers Clay Matthews and Brad Jones, fullback Korey Hall, guard Josh Sitton and …
