Tennessee Mosque the Victim Of a Hate Crime

Newsflash: we are sharing the earth with a group of raging assholes. At least that’s what the recent burning of a Murfreesboro, Tennessee mosque construction site seems to suggest.  The incident, in which someone poured flammable liquid on four pieces of construction equipment, is being investigated as arson.  My question is, who the hell raised these arsonists?  And where are their mothers?

A spokeswoman for the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro, Carmie Ayash, said:

“Everyone in our community no longer feels safe.  To set a fire that could have blown up equipment and, God forbid, spread and caused damage to the neighbors there … we really feel like this is something that we and the neighbors don’t deserve.”

Sarah Palin Making a Move on Margaret Thatcher

Guess Sarah Palin’s making it pretty clear that she intends to take on Barack Obama for the 2012 presidency.  Although she’s played it coy when asked directly, Palin’s latest “date” is a meeting with Britain’s Margaret Thatcher, arguably one of the most powerful women in the world, and this speaks volumes in terms of her future intentions.  Her endorsement would do much for a Palin presidential bid, and that sneaky Sarah is right on top of it.

From Britain’s Daily Mail:

[Palin’s] representatives approached Margaret Thatcher to ask for a meeting as part of a bid to enhance her claim to be the ‘heir to Ronald Reagan’ and prepare to challenge Mr Obama.

And Lady Thatcher has agreed to see Mrs Palin, who stood as the Republican vice-presidential candidate in 2008. A spokesman said: ‘We had an informal approach asking if Lady Thatcher would meet Mrs Palin if she comes to Britain and we said yes.’

The article focuses on Palin’s focused image shift from a “hockey mom” (in power suits, an apparent contradiction I never totally understood in the first place) to the next Ronald Reagan.  And being Sarah Palin, a face-to-face with Margaret Thatcher seems to be the next logical step.

Mrs Palin seems to have ditched the staid and formal ‘hockey mom’ image she appeared to favour during her campaign with Republican hopeful John McCain.

Earlier this month she was spotted looking relaxed and in high spirits at the races in New York, with her hair down and wearing a baseball cap, trendy sunglasses, a flimsy T-shirt and jeans.

The Denver Post Claims Sarah Palin Isn’t All Bad

A recent article portrayed Sarah Palin in a far more positive light than is usual, giving her credit for being the so-called “star” in the Republican party, bringing in both money and, of course, attention.

From The Denver Post:

As a vice presidential hopeful two years ago, Sarah Palin drew passion and loyalty from the Republican base even before there was a Tea Party movement.

Palin is the party’s biggest star. She draws audiences who pay $50 and $100 to see her speak. And her facile monikers like “mama grizzlies” and “pink elephants” go viral within hours.

“She has morphed from this very controversial vice presidential candidate who most people thought hurt McCain into this phenom,” said Larry Sabato, a political science professor at the University of Virginia. “She’s everywhere, doing everything. All the media interviews. The $100,000 speeches.”

Perhaps most interesting, though, is the article’s direct addressing of Palin in terms of moving women onto an equal playing field.

In the past several weeks, she also has taken to boosting conservative women to office — a role many observers say the Republican Party desperately needs.

“It’s certainly been the weakness in the Republican Party, they haven’t done that well among women,” said Gary Jacobson, a political-science professor at the University of California, San Diego. “It’s a niche that hasn’t been filled by anyone else.”

Speaking at a lunch last week, Palin touted Carly Fiorina for California’s U.S. Senate seat, Nikki Haley for South Carolina governor and Colorado U.S. Senate hopeful Jane Norton.

Norton says she is proud to be mentioned in a speech but doesn’t expect an official endorsement from Palin.

“I think Sarah Palin plays an indispensable role in the 2010 elections because she challenges the good ol’ boys,” Norton said. “Just like me.”

All right, I’m no hypocrite. I’m on pretty solid public record in terms of my disdain for Sarah Palin as a so-called feminist, as a mother, and as a human being. That being said, though, I have to give credit where it is due—Palin is unquestionably giving women, particularly conservative women, an opportunity in politics that was not previously available to them.
