Pippa Middleton: Collateral Damage?

Photo of Pippa Middleton Dancing in Bra

I have two siblings … and, of course, the accompanying angst of growing up between an older brother that would do anything my mother asked him to do and a younger sister my parents considered to be perfect.  Both have had their moments in the sun, and sometimes the shadows they cast were quite long.

However, beyond pretty intense envy from my position as the family’s black sheep, the accolades loaded on my sibs didn’t really impact me.  If anything, it was my sister who suffered a bit of reverse discrimination when teachers who’d had me in class saw her name and rolled their eyes, assuming they had another Katie on their hands (my brother went to private school, so I set the tone for the family name).

Which leads me to Pippa Middleton, a young lady who wowed the world with her grace and class at her sister Kate’s recent wedding …

Oklahoma Judicial Hopeful John Mantooth Has a Hate Campaign Led by His Daughter

You know, if you have skeletons in your closet, it’s probably a wise idea to avoid politics. John Mantooth, who is a candidate for an Oklahoma judicial appointment, doesn’t have the luxury of waiting for paternity suits or high priced prostitutes or anything like that. Nope, his candidacy is in danger of popping like a balloon because of a local newspaper ad taken out by Jan Schill, his adult daughter, imploring voters not to vote for her father.

From NewsOK:

McClain County judicial hopeful John Mantooth’s daughter and son-in-law paid for the quarter-page advertisement, which features a picture of the daughter’s family, highlights cases in which Mantooth has been sued and lists a website the couple started, www.donotvoteformydad.com.

Mantooth said the bad blood stems from his 1981 divorce from his daughter’s mother.

“This is a family issue which should have been kept private,” he said Monday. “I’m very sad about this. I’m very disappointed. I’m hurt, but I love my daughter, and I want things to get better, and I hope they will.”

You know, this is kind of interesting. That must have been some divorce to have repercussions that ripple through nearly thirty years. Maybe Kate Winslet should give seminars or something. If Mantooth is right and his daughter, now 31, is executing payback for family drama, that speaks volumes about her and could, in fact, backfire in her face.

What does give some credence to Schill’s argument, however, is that Mantooth further argues that her motives are of a political nature.

The NAACP + The Tea Party = The Shirley Sherrod Debacle?

If you follow the news at all, you’ve more likely than not heard the name Shirley Sherrod. While you’re probably aware of the veritable circus being made out of comments she made at an NAACP event, you might be a little foggy on the whole story. I know I was.

Basically, Shirley Sherrod was the USDA Director of Rural Development for the state of Georgia until she quit abruptly last week just before a media storm of epic proportions. Her resignation came about after conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart posted excerpts on July 19 of a video taken of Sherrod speaking about the importance of overcoming personal prejudices.

Sherrod’s comments, which were pretty obviously taken out of context in an edited two minute clip, come off as sounding about as racist as they come when speaking about her laissez faire attitude in helping white farmers because of their skin color. Sherrod was pressured to resign and ultimately did so via an e-mail sent from her BlackBerry on the side of a road.

From Politics Daily:

Sherrod made headlines Tuesday morning after a video clip surfaced from a speech she made in March to an NAACP forum recounting her meeting with a struggling white farmer who came to her for help in 1986.

“Here I was faced with having to help a white person save their land,” Sherrod said about her feelings 24 years ago. “So, I didn’t give him the full force of what I could do. I did enough so that when he (went to state or federal officials) he needed to go back and report that I did try to help him.”

Sherrod told CNN on Tuesday that the clip was taken out of context. She said she described the decades-old incident with the white farmer because she has since come to realize her mistake. “Working with him helped me realize the issue is not about race, it’s about those who have and those who have not,” she said.

And now the backlash has begun.

Howard Dean, former Democratic National Committee Chairman (and former presidential candidate), is making strong racist claims against Fox News, whose Bill O’Reilly led the charge in smearing Sherrod’s name.
