Romney Taking Vaginas Into Consideration Regarding Running Mate

Word Search of Potential Romney VP Candidates
The names being tossed around as possibilities for Mitt Romney’s running mate are many and varied.

Actually, they’re really not … everyone under consideration holds pretty hard-core right wing views, which shouldn’t be much of a surprise considering that Romney himself has a past history of being fairly liberal on social issues, and the Republican machine obviously wants to keep that under the radar.

But what does Romney’s potential veep have to do with feminism?

There is this impression, see, that Romney needs to strongly consider a female running mate because he is woefully behind Barack Obama in the vagina-sporting demographic (unlike the House floor, we at Zelda Lily are very comfortable with the word “vagina”).  In other words, if they want to pump up Romney’s support among women, let’s get a woman up there with him.

Because, you know, that worked out so well for John McCain last election …

Lawmakers in Wisconsin and Tennessee Try to Pull Funds from Planned Parenthood

Lawmakers in Tennessee and Wisconsin recently advanced legislation to end state funding of Planned Parenthood, simply because some of their clinics offer abortions. In Wisconsin, the million dollar cuts would affect 9 clinics, and around 12,000 low-income rural women, and in Tennessee, funding cuts will impact three clinics and about 9,000 patients.

In Wisconsin, changes were also made to their BadgerCare Plus program, a family planning program covered by Medicaid. Currently, BadgerCare covers around 60,000 people in Wisconsin, but the committee’s latest vote would drop men from the program’s care. According to a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin:

“What they’re trying to do makes our family planning program so dramatically different from what it was that the federal government could say, ‘This isn’t what we agreed on,’ and the program ends.”

Planned Parenthood as a Political Pawn: Not Progress!

Planned Parenthood is once again being used as a political pawn, and I for one am pretty annoyed about it. The group’s merits far outweigh the ugly birthmark some feel abortion services to be, and I do not get why anyone—anyone—would stomp all over the great good done by Planned Parenthood in terms of everything from cancer screenings to birth control … and that’s probably why I will never be a politician.

It is not my intent to bash Republicans here, by the way. I have a lot of close friends and family members that see the world from the right, and I fully respect their opinions. If they say, “I hate Barack Obama” and are able to explain this logically instead of spouting off racist rhetoric, I’m good with that.

I do at times, however, find myself biting my tongue because I want so badly to ask them how they feel about being identified by an increasingly ignorant vocal minority. Seriously, Republicans with a brain in your head, please take back your party! These nuts are reflecting badly on you.

And the recent stuff with the occasionally tacky Planned Parenthood, the basic arguments of which have been hashed out here before, is just one more drop of water in the bucket … but it’s a receptacle that’s getting dangerously close to the overflow point.

Spike TV Lists “7 Cutest Feminists”

So Spike has complied a list of their interpretation of the seven cutest feminists, and I’m not sure whether to be offended or amused. I mean, this is of course the channel best known for all manner of wrestling (which, like NASCAR, is somehow considered a sport … kind of) and CSI reruns.

That said, though, I do find their choices kind of interesting. And funny. And a little bit insulting.

Anyway, from Spike, “The Top Seven Cutest Feminists”:

#7: Jennifer Baumgardner

Like most bi-sexual writers from Fargo, North Dakota, Jennifer Baumgardner has had a storied literary career focused on political equity, feminist rights, and a long-term sexual relationship with a founding member of The Indigo Girls.

Yup, the author of works such as Young Women, Feminism and the Future and Look Both Ways: Bisexual Politics should definitely be known for bedding an Indigo Girl. And being cute. That’s huge.

#6: Kat Banyard

Author of The Equality Illusion and director of UK Feminista, Banyard has spent the majority of her professional life furthering the feminist cause and ensuring that women throughout England enjoy the same rights as their mildly effeminate male counterparts. (Which, judging by their national soccer team, includes the procurement of disease-free prostitutes and struggling to stay competitive in World Cup matches with Germany.)

Ouch, Spike, just … ouch.

#5: Kirsten Gillibrand (although Spike misidentifies her as “Kristen” Gillibrand)

The former Asian studies major and current New York senator is a self-described feminist who has worked tirelessly to occasionally fight for women’s rights in various political forums. During an interview with Womensrights.change.org, the former sorority girl turned tobacco defender claimed that “we’ve reached a point where women really can get elected at the highest levels of government all over the country” and “I have no doubt that we will see more women in elected office in the coming years.” (She also listed “bad breath” and “male flight attendants” as her turn-offs later in the article.)
