When Ms magazine placed Barack Obama on the front cover of its latest issue portrayed as the “Superman” of feminism (which isn’t remotely oxymoronic or anything), it got a lot of people talking, among them Daily Mail’s Liz Jones. So the good news is, feminism is increasingly coming up in conversations.
Obama, for example, has involved himself in some hot-button “feminist” issues, most notably ditching the “global gag rule” that kept pro-choice counseling away from international family planning groups, but there’s still an awfully long way to go … and not just for Obama, who Jones takes to task for the specific type of woman that he’s put into powerful places.

It probably comes as no surprise to anyone that oral sex is on the rise … or at least that conversations based around it are. Whether contemplating the convenience of shaved vs. bushy or the Catholic church’s historic ban on acts that don’t lead directly to procreation (a category that oral sex definitely falls under, as does masturbation … do Catholics not orgasm or something?), it’s all over the place right now.
Okay, just want to get out there that oral sex, both giving and receiving, is a source of great pleasure for me and millions of women all over the world. The idea that oral stimulation is gross or wrong or whatever is just so far off my radar screen it’s ridiculous (unlike Paris Hilton, I’m not a hypocrite).
Oral sex is increasingly common for young women to partake in, both in addition to and as an alternative of intercourse. Researchers out of the University of Alberta recently conducted a study on oral sex (must have been a lot of fun), concluding that it’s unquestionably part of what researcher Brea Malacad refers to as “the sexual revolution of the 21st century.”
Anyway, an interesting conclusion to be drawn from Malacad’s work here is that researchers, sex educators, and safe-sex marketers need to get on the cunnilingus caboose. The fellatio freeway. Route 69. Whatever.
Oscar-winning actress Geena Davis, who has a history of playing roles with a feminist beat to them (Thelma and Louise and A League of Their Own, to name a few), is moving on to a new role—working as an employee of the state of California. Yup, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has recently tapped Davis to join the Commission on the Status of Women. This is all pending approval from the California state senate, of course.
You know, I like Geena Davis. With the exception of that stupid Cutthroat Island, I think she’s made some great movie choices throughout her career. I mean, she was in Beetlejuice. ‘Nuff said. I honestly didn’t know, though, about the work she has done for women’s rights. It’s fairly considerable.
Davis, who has starred in films such as Tootsie, The Accidental Tourist and Thelma and Louise, is the founder of the “Geena Davis Institute on Gender in the Media.”
She set the group up after watching G-rated films and shows with her young daughter with the aim of reducing gender stereotyping in film and television and increasing the percentages of female characters.
