Columbia Sportswear’s “Tough Mother” Outsmarts Would-Be Burglar

In a prime example of women standing up for themselves—even at the age of 86—Columbia Sportswear’s CEO Gert Boyle outfoxed a bankrupt former advertising exec who attempted to get some fast cash by ripping off a rich old lady.  He obviously picked the wrong octogenarian.

Boyle, who in addition to her Columbia duties is an author known for her autobiography One Tough Mother, fled Germany with her Jewish family as a young teenager.  Yeah, after the Nazis, what’s a run-of-the-mill burglar?

Trial Underway for New Hampshire’s Resident Psycho Killer

Kimberly Cates, a 42-year-old nurse from a quintessential small New Hampshire town, was murdered last October by a group of angry, isolated, outcast adolescent boys. Now the alleged ringleader of the group—and the one who wielded the machete that left over thirty wounds on Cates’ body—is on trial for first-degree murder.

That would, of course, be Steven Spader of creepy-letter-to-local-newspaper-to-make-his-rantings-public infamy.

And while it’s not the three ring circus personified by the trials of Charles Manson and O.J. Simpson, coverage of the carnage perpetrated by kids robbing homes and killing a woman and seriously injuring her daughter just for kicks (Spader’s accomplice Christopher Gribble, whose first-degree murder trial is scheduled for February, told authorities that he “had wanted to kill someone for a long time and was disappointed he didn’t feel any emotion following the Cates killing”) is really pretty disturbing.

While video clips show Spader steepling his fingers and trying to stare down prosecution witnesses, I can’t help but be disgusted by the fact that Kimberly Cates, who literally …

There are some issues that garner strong reactions in people — reactions that render logical arguments and respectful discourse pretty much useless since emotions come into it. Abortion. Vaccinating children. Breastfeeding. Women’s facial hair (here on Zelda Lily, anyway). The death penalty is another such hot-button topic.

I would ask that, as you consider this story of a woman sentenced to death for masterminding the murder of her husband and stepson, you make an effort to put aside your emotions. Try to look at the whole situation, the first death sentence to be carried out on a woman in Virginia in almost a century, with an open mind.

Okay, here’s the gist. Teresa Lewis hired the guy she was banging on the side and another man to kill her husband Julian Lewis and his son Charles, motivating them through the promise of a share of the life insurance money.
