Romney Taking Vaginas Into Consideration Regarding Running Mate

Word Search of Potential Romney VP Candidates
The names being tossed around as possibilities for Mitt Romney’s running mate are many and varied.

Actually, they’re really not … everyone under consideration holds pretty hard-core right wing views, which shouldn’t be much of a surprise considering that Romney himself has a past history of being fairly liberal on social issues, and the Republican machine obviously wants to keep that under the radar.

But what does Romney’s potential veep have to do with feminism?

There is this impression, see, that Romney needs to strongly consider a female running mate because he is woefully behind Barack Obama in the vagina-sporting demographic (unlike the House floor, we at Zelda Lily are very comfortable with the word “vagina”).  In other words, if they want to pump up Romney’s support among women, let’s get a woman up there with him.

Because, you know, that worked out so well for John McCain last election

Anyway, The Fiscal Times created a list of fourteen potential running mates for Romney, and three of those names are women: Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-New Hampshire), former Secretary of State …

Poll Shows That Sarah Palin Doesn’t Represent Jane Q. Public

Poster of Palin Supporting "Average Joe Six-Pack"

Oh, Sarah Palin, how I miss you.  I don’t know if you’ve stopped saying stupid things or hired better PR peeps or what, but it seems like the tides have turned against you nevertheless.  You’re hardly ever in the news for insulting American Muslims or taking it personally when college kids try to stand up to Big Brother anymore; nope, most of the latest buzz with your name in it was related to Bristol’s appearance on Dancing With the Stars.

Yup, if new data from Hart Research Associates has any veracity, it appears that most women (74%, in fact) view Palin as untrustworthy on women’s health issues.  As a point of reference, 54% view Planned Parenthood as trustworthy in terms of women’s health.

In the name of full disclosure, Hart’s survey was sponsored by Planned Parenthood.  However, survey subjects included an equitable number of registered Republicans and Democrats making …

President Obama and the So-Called Ground Zero Mosque

Sometimes a person can’t win no matter what he or she does. Speaking out publicly on an issue? You’re butting your nose in where it doesn’t belong. Remaining silent so your name is kept out of it? You are silently consenting to a twisted truth set forth by your political opponents.

Civil rights activists did it. Feminists did it. And now, the President of the United States has done it … and being “hen-pecked” extensively for it.

Barack Obama, who a frightening percentage of Americans believe is Muslim despite significant proof to the contrary, found himself between the proverbial rock and hard place recently with regard to the “Ground Zero Mosque.”

From AOL News:

Speaking to Muslims observing the holy month of Ramadan at the White House on Friday, Obama asserted that Muslims have the right to build the planned mosque, citing freedom of religion as a core American value.

Yup, freedom of religion. That goes back to the very same U.S. Constitution that the Tea Partiers pontificate on again and again and again … as it suits their political agenda, of course. That President Obama made the same point, and in a far more legitimate and real life situation then much of the right-wing spinmesiters, must have the Tea Party grinding its collective teeth.

Look at the mess Sarah Palin made of the so-called Ground Zero Mosque. It’s simply disgusting.

Perhaps even more disgusting, though, is the implication that Obama is perpetuating Islamic terrorism through his support of a house of worship.

Laura Bush Publicly Disagrees with her Husband, Supports Gay Marriage

The battle toward legalizing same-sex marriage, still a slow-moving and uphill process, has gained an unlikely ally: Laura Bush.

From The Huffington Post:

Former First Lady Laura Bush has found herself back in the news after an appearance on “Larry King Live” in which she discussed the differences of opinion she had with her husband, President George W. Bush, on abortion and gay rights. During her interview, she cast the issue of gay marriage as something that “will come,” owing to a “generational” shift in opinion on the matter.

You know what? My esteem for Laura Bush went up, like, tenfold after reading about this. I mean, there’s no question that the lady supports gay marriage. She told Larry King:

I think there are a lot of people who have trouble coming to terms with that because they see marriage as traditionally between a man and a woman, but I also know that when couples are committed to each other and love each other that they ought to have the same sort of rights that everyone has.

I was also very impressed that she spoke publicly of disagreeing with her husband on numerous issues. When George W. Bush was President, I found his wife to be pretty milquetoast. She always seemed to be by his side smiling in a clichéd wifely manner that seemed a twisted throwback to an earlier decade. The fact that she is now speaking out about her support for gay marriage (and her belief that Roe versus Wade should not be overturned) is a tremendous boost.

She’s taking some flack for it, though. A spokeswoman for Focus on the Family, a conservative Christian group, had this to say:

“It’s disappointing to hear Laura Bush, who is a well respected and admired former first lady, espouse positions on marriage and the value of human life that are contrary not only to her husband’s but arguably, according to polls, in conflict with the majority of Americans.”

What I love is that Laura Bush had a reasonable, scientifically backed reason to explain her position. Her argument, based on research conducted by Jeffrey Lax and Justin Phillips entitled “Gay Rights in the States: Public Opinion and Policy Responsiveness”, is that the most strident opponents to gay marriage will be … well, uh, dead soon enough, and their opinions won’t matter at all then.

This probably isn’t a very nice way of putting it, but basically, the most significant segment of the population that opposes gay marriage is the one that’s closest to death. Obviously, gay marriage will be coming to some states sooner than others, but the tide toward marriage equality is inexorable.

It’s the nature of things that every new generation tends to be skeptical of those that came before it. It’s just a pity that so many Americans are going to reflect upon the way their parents and grandparents approached this issue and find themselves feeling deeply embarrassed.

While the crux of this story isn’t necessarily unique—Cindy McCain, for example, came out in support of gay marriage despite her husband’s vocal opposition—I find it almost heartwarming. I had sort of a Stepford vibe from Laura Bush, and it warms my heart to know that I might have been wrong.

Are you surprised by this action? Do you think Laura Bush’s support will make any sort of difference to the cause of same-sex marriage?
