The United States is sports-obsessed. Here in San Diego, the football coach at SDSU gets paid more than our dean does. Let me just repeat that phrase so it can sink in: our college football coach gets paid more than our college dean does! I hope my point has been made.
See, I was under the impression that college is about academics and that football was an extracurricular activity. Isn’t a university’s main focus supposed to be, I don’t know, the improvement of one’s mind? With all the educational budget cuts in California you’d think that the SDSU football coach wouldn’t be making $675,000 a year. But he does. As students sit in overcrowded classes and with an unprecedented amount of faculty cuts, our school’s football coach is probably being fed grapes off of golden platters. OK, so I may be over-exaggerating about the grapes but still … his salary is ridiculous. It’s this kind of stuff that makes me worry that my nation’s values are backwards.
