
A new study out of the University of Connecticut shows that it is larger societal attitudes, not just those of men, that are preventing women from pursuing their hobbies and career interests, particularly if these are in creative fields. Dr. Kathy Reis notes that the reason for this is that women were expected to largely be nurturing mothers and were only to work in order to provide for their families. Thus, if women want to pursue jobs or education that is considered less practical or “left brained,” they are often made to feel guilty for this choice and are derided as selfish and not looking out for the welfare of their kin.
