Is There Such Thing as a Bad Way of Saving Money?

Photo of a Piggy Bank and Paper Money

With the economy being what it is, pretty much everybody is trying to cut back.  Big (skipping the annual vacation to Disney World) or small (having your kids brown bag it instead of buying hot lunch at school), it seems like finding ways to save money is a common theme.

But is it possible that some penny pinching strategies can backfire in the long run?

Perhaps so.

Money Ning recently ran a piece featuring five supposedly common ways to further stretch a dollar that can actually …

Color Me Jaded: More Scumbags Neglect Their Kid

Sign Reading: No Guns Children Playing

Am I naïve to think that two-year-old children should be concerned with fingerpainting, “Yo Gabba Gabba”, and discovering shells and seaglass on a beach … and that parents should be encouraging these endeavors?

A recent story out of New Hampshire’s largest city apparently sends a different message.

So Manchester couple Danielle Maxwell and James Currier leave their apartment (with their puppy, I might add) without bringing their toddler, who was found “lying in her own vomit” by police.

Is it wrong, by the way, that all I can hear is Peter Clemenza advising, “Leave the gun, take the cannoli?”

No surprise that “endangering the welfare of a child” has been …

Another *Yawn* Makeover Story

Before and After Photos of Jael Gardiner

Am I the only one out there that feels absolutely nothing for the many “miracle makeover” stories?  I remembered that one of my mother’s monthly magazine subscriptions of the Family Circle/Good Housekeeping vein featured a “makeover of the month,” and even as a fifth or sixth grader (yes, I read everything) thinking to myself, “That’s all well and good, but what’s she gonna look like in six months?”  Between that and The Sally Jessy Raphael Show, I was pretty cynical about makeovers from a very young age.

Michigan’s Jael Gardiner story was recently spotlighted on Stylelist’s “Makeover Diaries” feature, and I found myself shaking my head and, yeah, rolling my eyes … and I truly mean no offense to Ms. Gardiner, who is currently a college student and rightfully proud of her accomplishments (including a 60+ pound weight …

Did Couple Temporarily Lose Custody of Newborn Because of Their Political Beliefs?

Photo of Oath Keepers Poster

Cheyenne Irish was removed from the custody of her parents when she was only 16 hours old by DCYF. This raises a whole host of questions, the most important being how compelling was the complaint leading to this action?

My gut says it had to have been pretty bad … I’ve had dealings with DCYF in my career as a teacher, and I’m at times frustrated by how slowly the wheels seem to turn. What made New Hampshire’s Johnathan Irish and Stephanie Taylor so horrible that the state removed the baby from their custody when she hadn’t even been on the earth for a full day? Even the couple that named their kid Adolf Hitler managed to hold onto him for three years …

If you give any credence to Irish and Taylor, it’s a witch hunt of sorts, with their inclusion in a group called the Oath Keepers playing a direct role in the custody issue.

While it’s kind of a moot point now, as custody of baby Cheyenne was returned to her parents after a court hearing last week, I find myself completely intrigued by this story because there are clearly a lot of puzzle pieces missing.

From WMUR:

Irish and his girlfriend said the state cited abuse and neglect claims. But Irish said officials also took the baby because they were uneasy about his involvement in a group called the Oath Keepers, which claims to uphold the constitution.

The state said it doesn’t take someone’s political views into consideration when they get involved with a family.

And, as you can imagine, the Oath Keepers are pretty pissed off themselves.

Members of the Oath Keepers protested at the courthouse and said the state unfairly used their group’s name as a reason to take custody of the child.

“People are worried that if they speak out or join some particular group that someday down the road, it could come back to haunt them or be used against them in a proceeding about their children,” said Stewart Rhodes of Oath Keepers.

Beyond the Oath Keepers part of the equation, Foster’s Daily Democrat contains some pretty specific information about why they were concerned about Baby Cheyenne’s safety.

While DCYF officials have denied that Irish’s affiliation with the Oath Keepers was a reason for taking Cheyenne away, they do make some very serious allegations against Irish and Taylor in …
