Just in case you wanted to know if our newly-minted Miss America, Teresa Scanlan, thinks the Michelle Bachmann Newsweek cover is sexist, here you have it:

“I absolutely think so. Not because there’s a difference of political opinions there, but because Newsweek has had other candidates who they haven’t agreed with — they’ve had Rush Limbaugh on the cover, they had former candidates [Mike] Huckabee and [John] McCain on their covers –- and whenever they have a male on their cover, even if they don’t agree with them as far as policy goes, they portray them in a serious light, they take them seriously and they portray them in a positive light. Then, as we saw two years ago with the Sarah Palin cover in her running shorts, and then now with Michele Bachmann. They simply try to degrade women and make fun of them and portray them in a negative light — and I think that shows extreme sexism.”

Could Kayla Martell, Miss Delaware, Be the First Bald Miss America?

picture of miss delaware kayla bald pictures

Though beauty pageants are not big business here in the UK, being more the preserve of our cousins ‘across the pond,’ there’s no denying that looks take top billing at such events – the title ‘beauty pageant’ puts across what the judges and spectators are looking for quite explicitly. I don’t know about you, but when I imagine what I perceive to be a typical beauty pageant contestant, I picture a tall, slim, shapely woman with long blonde hair – along the lines of Holly, Bridget & Kendra from ‘The Girls of the Playboy Mansion.’

Will Miss New York Claire Buffie Win the Miss America Pagent With Her Gay Rights Platform? Oh, and Reasons You Should Love Her.

Finally, some good news!

Claire Buffie, the new Miss New York, decided that she didn’t want her life ruined by Perez Hilton and entered the competition on a gay rights platform. She plans to run for Miss America with the same one.

Just kidding! But seriously, Perez Hilton sucks for ruining Carrie Prejean‘s life, even if she has questionable morals. I think she was pretty damn brave to answer Hilton’s question the way that she did, though I disagree with her completely. Any credibility that Hilton had — any at all —  was lost when he made videos calling her  a ‘dumb bitch.’ Sickening, really. Really great, well-thought out response, Perez! You really make me want to support you!

Anyway.

I’m pretty much in love with Claire Buffie, because not only is she the first Miss America contestant to run on a gay rights platform, but because she is amazingly eloquent and really taking the opportunity to publicize some under the radar issues.

Watching her interview with MSNBC was so refreshing. I highly recommend viewing it or at least reading the transcript here. However, for now, here are …
