Superman is Unemployed

photo of clark kent pictures
The world is forever changed. Nothing will ever be the same. Clark Kent … has quit The Daily Planet. I know, I know—it hurts. Superman has worked at The Daily Planet since 1938 and now the DC Universe said that because of his dual role as journalist and Superman that Kent has been falling behind on stories. Look, I work two jobs too (sometimes more) and you don’t see me quitting! I’m not falling behind! I’m not giving up! Look at all the exclamation points I can use! Yes, I just compared myself to Superman and came out the better of the two.

Now that Clark Kent will have time on his hands, what can we expect from him? “Rather than Clark be this clownish suit that Superman puts on, we’re going to really see Clark come into his own in the next few years as far as being a guy who takes to the Internet and to the airwaves and starts speaking an unvarnished truth,” the issue’s writer, Scott Lobdell, said.

Are you kidding me? Are you freaking kidding me? He’s going to be a blogger? Or a podcast host? Come on! The whole draw of Superman was the fact that his alter-ego was clownish! It was endearing! Stop screwing with my superhero DC!

I was behind DC and Marvel when they went in the direction of “outing” certain superheroes, when they made women lead characters but I draw the line here. Think of the future generations who will never know Clark Kent, the clumsy, silly, journalist. It’s almost as painful as the moment I realized there’s a generation of children that will never know Alex Trebek had a mustache.

There’s going to be a huge void in the superhero world if this comes to pass. Who will pick up the slack? Who will be a snarky, clumsy, social awkward writer with a desire to change the world for the better? Wait a minute … I’m snarky … I’m clumsy … I’m socially awkward! I’m a writer … my favorite color is blue, and I look great in a cape and glasses. My God! I think I could be the new Superman!

Thank you, DC Comics, because you have no idea how to keep a loyal fan base happy and constantly feel the need to mess with a perfect formula. I now can have a new calling in life. I will now live under the illusion that if I could just will myself to put on pants and step outside my little bungalow on the west coast, instead of watching American Horror Story on DVR with my dogs … I could save this world.

Japanese Surname Law Faces Legal Challenge

photo of japanese surname characters pictures

Five people in Japan are reportedly preparing an unprecedented legal challenge against the Japanese government. Why? They claim that a civil law forcing them to choose a single surname after marriage violates their constitutional rights. If they succeed, married men and women in Japan will for the first time be able to retain their own surnames, removing one of Japan’s few remaining legal obstacles to gender equality.

In the vast majority of cases in Japan, women are required to relinquish their maiden name after marriage, although a small number of men take their wife’s maiden name as their new surname. Critics, however, say the time has come to modernise the law surrounding marital surnames in Japan – the only G8 nation with laws governing such matters.

The five challengers of the law argue that the law’s requirement that a single surname be chosen contradicts articles of Japan’s constitution guaranteeing individual liberty and equal rights to husband and wife. The five are also seeking 1m Japanese Yen each in compensation …

Saddest Story of the Week Tells of an Elementary School “Surrounded by Prostitutes”

I wouldn’t describe myself as pro-prostitution, but I’m definitely not against prostitution, either (especially considering how the industry is treated in our country), just that I acknowledge that it fits into a realm of jobs that can be fulfilling and also be awful (now that I think of it, like most jobs are). I also feel, like many others, that there’s a need to legalize careers in fields relating to sex or drugs that are probably not, considering history, going anywhere. Like any job, prostitution is fraught with risks and rewards, but it’s the sex that makes it more complicated, as we’re all just obsessed with it. Despite all of these feelings about prostitution theoretically, I could not get past the deep sadness depicted in this article about an elementary school that is “surrounded by prostitutes.”

At West Farms elementary school in the Bronx in New York City:

Want to Advance Your Career? One Rule: Cover Up Your Tits.

Women who show too much cleavage at work are sabotaging their careers and could even face the sack, according to a new survey carried out here in the UK. The survey, which was carried out for famous entrepreneur Peter Jones, found that bosses feel that low-cut tops are one of the biggest mistakes a female worker can make, quite contrary to the idea that womanly curves can be an advantage to women in business.

Clearly the consequences of flashing a bit too much boob can be disastrous – one in five managers who took part in the survey admitted that they had fired a member of staff for not dressing ‘appropriately.’ The survey also found that almost half of those surveyed …
