The Gabby Giffords Gun Raffle Debacle

Photo of Gabrielle Giffords

Somehow, the outrage I expected over the poor taste vis a vis the gun target looming over U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords’ district in light of the life-threatening injuries she received during a shooting never reached the heights I expected.  I mean, people shook their heads in disgust, yeah, but there was no real freak out.

Which is why I’ve been hesitant to get into the most recent insensitive action by Arizona’s Republicans.

Look, I’m not a hater of the right-wing, per se.  I’m not, like, “You’re a Republican?  Clearly you’re an uncaring moron.”

It’s just that, as …

Washington State Republican Questions Moral Fiber of Girl Scouts and Public School Graduates

Ad of a Uniformed Woman Forcibly Selling Girl Scout Cookies
I am one of those people incapable of winning a verbal argument, even if I am 100% right. There’s some sort of short circuit between my brain and my mouth that renders me useless in a public debate of any sort. However, as one of my high school social studies teachers infamously said to me, “You can write your way out of a sealed cardboard box.” The problem with putting your ideas, opinions, and arguments into writing, though, particularly with the advent of the internet, is that they become a matter of public record.

Hans Zeiger, a Republican running for the Washington State House of Representatives, has recently discovered this very notion.

The 25-year-old Zeiger, a writer and senior fellow at the American Civil Rights Union, is also an Eagle Scout … and a vocal opponent to the apparent feminist breeding ground that is the Girl Scouts of America.

According to Washington’s News Tribune , this is just one excerpt of many Zeiger pieces that have been removed at his request from public viewing:

One might wonder why the Girl Scouts have been spared the painful attacks that have been launched upon the Boy Scouts by the Left in recent years. The reasons are simple: the Girl Scouts allow homosexuals and atheists to join their ranks, and they have become a pro-abortion, feminist training corps. … If the Girl Scouts of America can’t get back to teaching real character, perhaps it will be time to look for our cookies elsewhere.

You know, I was a Girl Scout leader for several years. I don’t recall ever once encouraging my girls to play doctor naked, disavow God in any way, hate men on general principle, or prepare their bodies for multiple abortions.

We focused more on things like community service, personal responsibility for your actions (and I’m talking “don’t hit Susy back just because she hit you,” not “if you find yourself pregnant, go to Planned Parenthood and get an abortion … hell, get two or three”), a sense of girls not feeling oppressed because of their gender, and being …

President Obama and the So-Called Ground Zero Mosque

Sometimes a person can’t win no matter what he or she does. Speaking out publicly on an issue? You’re butting your nose in where it doesn’t belong. Remaining silent so your name is kept out of it? You are silently consenting to a twisted truth set forth by your political opponents.

Civil rights activists did it. Feminists did it. And now, the President of the United States has done it … and being “hen-pecked” extensively for it.

Barack Obama, who a frightening percentage of Americans believe is Muslim despite significant proof to the contrary, found himself between the proverbial rock and hard place recently with regard to the “Ground Zero Mosque.”

From AOL News:

Speaking to Muslims observing the holy month of Ramadan at the White House on Friday, Obama asserted that Muslims have the right to build the planned mosque, citing freedom of religion as a core American value.

Yup, freedom of religion. That goes back to the very same U.S. Constitution that the Tea Partiers pontificate on again and again and again … as it suits their political agenda, of course. That President Obama made the same point, and in a far more legitimate and real life situation then much of the right-wing spinmesiters, must have the Tea Party grinding its collective teeth.

Look at the mess Sarah Palin made of the so-called Ground Zero Mosque. It’s simply disgusting.

Perhaps even more disgusting, though, is the implication that Obama is perpetuating Islamic terrorism through his support of a house of worship.

New Hampshire Dems Under Fire for Hating on Sarah Palin

It is no secret how I feel about Sarah Palin. I think she is an incompetent upstart. I think she’s a hypocrite. I think she is an embarrassment to women everywhere who have fought long and hard to be taken seriously.

I would never wish death upon her, though.

Which is what New Hampshire State House candidate Keith David Halloran did on the Facebook page of Republican D.J. Bettencourt, who had a link up to the obituary of Alaska’s former Senator Ted Stevens. Stevens, a legend in Alaskan politics, died when his plane crashed en route to a fishing trip this past week.

From WMUR:

In response to the post, Halloran wrote, “Just wish Sarah and Levy [sic] were on board,” referring to Sarah Palin and Levi Johnston, the father of her grandson.

Halloran’s statement received a quick response from the state GOP, which said, “His publicly stated death wish for Gov. Palin and her family is abhorrent, and has no place in our public discourse.”

You know, I don’t always agree with Republicans, but they were absolutely right on this one. I mean, that’s just … sick.
