Why do girls wear pink and boys wear blue?

photo of pink versus blue pictures photos

I once had a cultural studies prof gripe, “Why is the first question someone asks you about your new baby, ‘Is it a boy or a girl’? Why don’t they ask if the baby is healthy or how the mother is doing? Why is gender so important that it trumps everything else?”. And he’s right- why is the gender so damn important? It’s a baby- it is going to do baby-like things without any regard for it’s gender. But everyone is dying to find out the sex of their baby, and those that find out the sex before the baby is born will already start to prescribe what the baby wears, plays with and rooms in relation to this unimportant factor. Parents are terrified to have someone approach them to declare, “Oh, what an adorable little boy!” when they are pushing their stroller out and about, and will go so far as to piece their infant’s flesh to …

Tweeting the Birthing Process

picture of twitter logo photos

Online social networks have sort of destroyed the idea of the personal and private. I know way more about the day to day of my friends now than I did 5 years ago (where I remember aptly refusing to join Facebook because it looked stupid. Oh, Laura of 2006, you had so many ideals…). Not all of this information is particularly useful to me, but people share how they feel in hopes of getting a response from others, and potentially making some sort of connection. Why, you have the flu? You have a lot of school work to do, eh? You’re too tired to make dinner because you had a long day at work? Well, your aim is to have someone offer a sympathetic comment, and make you feel better. And many will do so. I may not be one of them, but I get it.

And while there are tons of things that I learn about on Facebook that I could not give two shits about, I do care about major life changing events. Like pregnancy. Some people think pregnancy is too personal to be shared online, and that it should be kept a private affair. I know one friend who HATES when people post their sonograms, because they are actually putting up a photo of their uterus for all to see. And she finds that gross. Which I get. But I sort of enjoy having access to my friends’ pregnancies. It makes me feel like I’m a bigger part of …

Philadelphia Abortion Doctor Charged With 8 Counts of Murder

photo of gosnell clinic kermit gosnell pictures

A Philadelphia doctor, Dr Kermit Gosnell, is facing eight murder charges for operating what one District Attorney has called a ‘filthy, foul-smelling house of horrors’ abortion clinic where two woman and several infants were killed. Though ‘house of horrors’ might sounds like a bit of an exaggeration, perhaps stated by someone very conservative and anti-abortion, sadly it transpires that it is not.

According to Yahoo News, some of the charges that will be brought against Gosnell include running a clinic with no medically-trained staff other than himself,  murdering at least one apparently healthy woman by administering  an overdose of Demerol, delivering babies live and then killing them with scissors – a procedure he referred to as ‘snipping’ – and allowing cats to roam freely throughout the clinic, urinating on already bloodstained …

Woman Gives Birth to Twins With Different Daddies

Twins fascinate me.  When I was a kid I wanted to be one, give birth to a set, or at the very least befriend twin sisters that would astoundingly finish each other sentences and have wacky ESP moments.  My brother had two sets of twin friends, all of whom I wanted to marry. I used to stare at their beautiful identical faces in the hopes that …
