The Gabby Giffords Gun Raffle Debacle

Photo of Gabrielle Giffords

Somehow, the outrage I expected over the poor taste vis a vis the gun target looming over U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords’ district in light of the life-threatening injuries she received during a shooting never reached the heights I expected.  I mean, people shook their heads in disgust, yeah, but there was no real freak out.

Which is why I’ve been hesitant to get into the most recent insensitive action by Arizona’s Republicans.

Look, I’m not a hater of the right-wing, per se.  I’m not, like, “You’re a Republican?  Clearly you’re an uncaring moron.”

It’s just that, as …

Destigmatizing Bipolar Disorder

Photo of Girl Half Smiling and Half Frowning

The word bipolar is, like narcissism, thrown around a lot these days. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’ve been asked, “Are you fucking bipolar or something?” when I’d get annoyed over smelly socks on the floor or not feeling like going out on a given night or just suffering from the monthly hormonal shit. And to be completely honest, I’ve referred to my car’s heater as bipolar (you digitally set it at a certain temperature, but man, 78 degrees is definitely not consistent in my old lady mobile).

Bipolar disorder is really not something to joke about, though. Once called manic depressants, those who live a bipolar life have a tough go of it, usually depending on medication and psychiatry to maintain some semblance of a normal life. This might be especially true of …

Columbia Sportswear’s “Tough Mother” Outsmarts Would-Be Burglar

Photo of "One Tough Mother" by Gert Boyle
In a prime example of women standing up for themselves—even at the age of 86—Columbia Sportswear’s CEO Gert Boyle outfoxed a bankrupt former advertising exec who attempted to get some fast cash by ripping off a rich old lady.  He obviously picked the wrong octogenarian.

Boyle, who in addition to her Columbia duties is an author known for her autobiography One Tough Mother, fled Germany with her Jewish family as a young teenager.  Yeah, after the Nazis, what’s a run-of-the-mill burglar?

From AOL News:

Nestor Gabriel Caballero Gutierrez, 39, is being …

Was Elderly Woman Justified in Shooting Longtime Middle School-Aged Harassers?

Margaret Matthews, a Chicago woman in her late sixties took justice into her own hands (a la Lisbeth Salander) after being allegedly tormented by two boys for over a year … and her South Shore neighborhood is rallying behind her after she finally reached a breaking point and took out a gun.

But was this a heroic act of self-defense or does it cross the line into vigilante justice?

From the Chicago Tribune:

In this rough South Side neighborhood where residents often observe a code of silence, voices rose up in unison Wednesday to support Matthews, affectionately known as “Miss Margaret.”

“I think she did right,” said Jimmie Johnson, echoing a sentiment heard over and over on Matthews’ block. “She was just protecting her property.”

Tnoila McCoy, 54, a neighbor and decades-long friend of Matthews’, said the two boys had been causing problems for months.

“They’ve been terrible to her for over a year. They burned up her barbecue pit and her flower bed,” McCoy said. “She was protecting herself. These kids came to her yard, jumped her fence and started terrorizing her. She didn’t just shoot a kid.”

Specifically, the two boys, aged twelve and thirteen, threw bricks …
