Do You Know What Your Genitalia Looks Like?

Yeah, me neither.

Believe it or not, though, a private school in Philadelphia is actually tackling head on “pleasure, orgasms, healthy relationships, and the wide variety of what is normal in both sexual desire and physical appearance” through direct classroom instruction.

The blog Our Bodies Ourselves recently focused on the significance of this news out of Philly’s Friends’ Central School, particularly the significance of girls knowing the … er … ins and outs of their anatomy.

The thing is, at the piece points out, most girls’ mental images of what female genitalia should look like is based on pornography, which is hardly realistic when you take into account both the airbrushing and the obvious selection process.

Our Bodies Ourselves blogger Rachel Walden incorporates this interesting news out of Philadelphia into her own experiences … and the greater concern that is lack of knowledge about the …

Breast Shadow Puppets to Raise Money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer

Australian hit Busting Out! is on its way to Edinburgh to raise money for a Scottish breast cancer organization. The show, which features topless stars partaking in “breast-based contortions along with songs, dance, and comedy sketches,” is produced by the same people that brought us The Vagina Monologues.

From The Scotsman:

Busting Out! has been an Australian festival hit. Billed as a graphic and “raucously entertaining’” show – and an “empowering and affirming celebration of the female body” – it has been brought to Edinburgh by the original producer of the Vagina Monologues.

The early evening show includes performers Emma Powell and Bev Killick doing shadow puppets of the Taj Mahal and camels with their breasts, as well as inviting audience members to join a bra-removal competition. They are topless for much of its 75 minutes.

But while the show breaks taboos, said UK producer Mark Goucher, it is far removed from bawdy Fringe fare, such as Puppetry of the Penis or late-night cabaret acts.

“It is not vulgar, it is not Burlesque. It is really a celebration of women’s bodies,” he said.

Part of me cannot help but think that a show that proudly advertises “breast contortions” (which frankly sounds kind of painful) …

Doctor Experiments With Steroids Intended to Suppress Lesbian Urges

Photo of Dexamethasone Bottle

Endocrinologist Dr. Maria New is peddling the steroid dexamethasone to pregnant women as a means of keeping the genitalia of female babies from looking male. Apparently New is also experimenting with the drug’s “potential to prevent girls from developing same-sex attractions; ‘abnormal’ lack of interest in dolls, babies, and traditional mommy-ing; and ‘masculine’ career interests.” Damn, that’s a lot of pressure to put on one little pill … and a lot of idiocy in the research design behind it.

From Change.org:

Prenatal “dex” is used by Dr. New to prevent the development of androgynous or masculine-looking genitalia in girls with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH), which is caused by an overproduction of androgens. This is an already controversial practice and has raised ethics questions: as Time magazine discusses, dex carries significant unknown dangers and doesn’t address the underlying disorder, which can pose serious health problems in both boys and girls.

Yet Dr. New, instead of dialing back and worrying about the potential harm that she is doing, sees an opportunity to take that research further and find a way to make sure we only reproduce straight stay-at-home moms. She believes her research demonstrates a connection between excess production of androgens and girls who are queer or exhibit “masculine behavior” in “childhood play, peer association, career and leisure time preferences.” So Dr. Maria New is essentially saying that things like, oh I don’t know, wanting to be a scientist, are “abnormalities.”

Wow. I cannot believe that this is legal. So if someone’s daughter is into playing trucks, prefers to play with boys over girls, and wants to be a trash collector, we should start laying on the dex? Because, well, screwing around with physiological functions like androgen production to potentially change the entire make-up of a child makes so much sense.

First Grader Pees on Classmate, Media Frenzy Perpetuates Bullying Problem

photo of school boy being bullied

An Ohio first grader is facing disciplinary action after peeing on a female classmate in the school lunchroom.

From Fox8:

“[My daughter] told me that some boys had exposed themselves at school. Other children had witnessed what happened and one of the boys had urinated on her pants,” said the mother.

The little girl said, “We sat down. He said, ‘I got to use the bathroom’ and he peed on my knee.”

Okay, so let me get this straight. This little girl had been exposed to male genitalia by her classmates … but what really got the school’s attention was when one of them whipped it out and took a piss on her? I have two daughters, and I have to tell you, I’d be angry and upset if some kid took a leak on them—but I’d be bullshit over a boy exposing himself (and yes, I realize you sort of have to expose yourself in order to pee if you’re male, but you know what I mean). To me, the exposure is a far bigger deal than the peeing.

Principal Terry Lipford said, “We’re not denying that happened. Unfortunately, situations like that happen, we take it very seriously.”

Lipford said he met with the girl’s mother to discuss the incident the following day. He also spoke with the little girl and made sure she talked with a guidance counselor. Lipford says the school does not tolerate “bullying” and is looking into whether the alleged harassment is an on-going issue.

The girl’s mother says her 7-year-old daughter has endured bullying by several classmates throughout the school year. “For the past six months, one of the little boys for sure has been bullying her, pulling on her hair.”

Despite several meetings and conversations with the teacher, the mother says the harassment has continued.

“We are going to investigate her concerns. If there was bullying concerned, we will deal with that,” said Lipford.

I’m probably going to take some heat for this, but the concept of “bullying” in terms of schools has become out of control. Yes, it happens. Yes, it’s horrible. No, this girl should never have been doused with bodily fluids. However, using the recent buzzword “bullying” attracts media attention, sets up lawsuit opportunities, and in general creates bedlam–and kids (and their parents) KNOW this.

Hear me out. I’ve worked in the education field for ten years. I have seen horrible examples of bullying, but the ones that were truly appalling (and had a clear victim) were few and far between. Generally, it goes something like this:
