Rape Victim Vindicated … But Does it Change Anything for Other Women?

Photo of Rapist Willis in Handcuffs

Rape is arguably the worst possible crime in existence.  While the physical damage generally heals, the emotional repercussions of a sexual assault are lifelong.  Perhaps the worst thing about surviving a rape is the intrinsic need to keep it secret.

It is very difficult to say the words, “I was raped.”  It is even harder, however, to must the courage to say the words and face a firestorm of people casting doubt.  Since sexual assault is often difficult if not impossible to prove (never mind define), there is a surprisingly high percentage of people (and some of them are regular Zelda Lily readers) that automatically assume a woman claiming rape is lying.

I was raped.  It happened in 1998, I was drunk, and it was unspeakable.  While the physical effects healed fairly quickly, I will never fully recover emotionally.  To this day, I am not able to …

The Post-Super Bowl Sexual Assault Roundup

photo of ben roethlisberger drunk pictures

Despite my lack of love for football, I was rooting for the Green Bay Packers during Sunday’s Super Bowl game. But it wasn’t because they seemed like the particularly better team (though I do love cheeseheads). No I, like many others, was so turned off by stories concerning Ben Roethlisberger and his lurid history of sexual assault that I couldn’t bring myself to root for him or the Pittsburgh Steelers. In the days that have followed, however, I’ve wondered if rooting for the Packers along the lines that they are a “better” group of individuals was particularly wise or based in fact.

Is it vaginal trauma?  Women can have evidence of vaginal “trauma” from consensual intercourse.  Is it bite marks?  Evidence of sodomy (which, of course, could also be “consensual”)?  Bruises? Lacerations?

I mean, seriously …

And I guess what’s really got me up in arms about this is that it’s really all about that evil four-letter word, abortion.

From Mother Jones:

For years, federal laws restricting the use of government funds to pay for abortions have included exemptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest. (Another …

Political Hopeful Ken Buck Criticized for Declining to Prosecute a Rape Charge

Photo of Ken Buck Campaigning

When bad stuff happens, most people will talk to their friends about it, rant and rave via Facebook and Twitter, or take it to the next therapy session. When the truly unspeakable happens, however, there’s more of a tendency to keep it inside, to bottle up your feelings out of guilt, shame, or simple utter devastation.

Rape falls under the “truly unspeakable” category.

It takes a damn strong person to bring forward a rape charge—I did not have the guts to do it myself, and it almost drove me crazy. I am in awe of those strong enough to name their accuser, to publicly hold the bastard accountable.

Which is why I want to punch Colorado Republican Senatorial …
