Bitches Be Fightin’: Cheryl Cole/Paula Abdul Edition

photo of paula abdul and cheryl cole pictures photos x factor hosts

Cheryl Cole (pictured on the left), is a huge celebrity in Britain. First, she was in a wildly successful girl group called Girls Aloud, then she went on to be one of the hosts of Simon Cowell’s UK X-Factor. Cowell naturally assumed that exporting Cole’s charming television persona to the US would be a slam-dunk. Along with Paula Abdul, Cole was set to star in the US version of the X-Factor, but of course it wasn’t long before rumors began to fly that ladies just can’t work together without being jealous, and then Cole was mysteriously fired from the show and replaced with Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger.

First there were allegations that at a photocall for all three of the X-Factor judges, Cole was “fuming” when Cowell wanted to have a couple of shots of just him and Paula.

There were even numerous articles arguing that Paula Abdul had “outshone” and “outclassed” Cole on the red carpet by wearing — gasp — the same color dress.

The most recent rumor is that the American TV bosses felt that Cole’s Geordie accent would just be too strong for the average American to understand her — in fact, even her native Britain makes fun of her accent with The Guardian offering a “translation” for one of her recent appearances:

Yer’s alreet on the sleur ones, but whatzza racket am I hearing noo, man? My advice is to concentrate on ballads

Yer dazzlin’, pet! Keep gannin’ like that and youse’ll be a starYou’re very good. Your career has a lot of potential

Simon’s mad. Yer singin’ was al ower the place! Like Shola Ameobi clean through on goal I disagree with the other judges. That for me was not your best performance

And so on.

Here’s a Youtube video interview with Cole and you’re free to decide for yourself, but personally I have no trouble understanding her. But the most recent word from Cole herself is that she hasn’t been given a reason for her dismissal from the show, and that she’s been told to “get a grip,” or she’ll lose her spot on the British program as well.

Whatever the reason, Cole has taken quite a press beating these last couple of weeks. The press coverage in the UK and the US differs slightly, with the US focusing more on a bitch fight and the UK focusing more on class concerns. It’s somewhat galling that the initial assumption was that Paula couldn’t handle Cole potentially stealing her spotlight and had her booted for… whatever reason. Or that the X-Factor just couldn’t work that Professor Higgins magic on their fair lady in the end and Miss Doolittle had to totter back to her classless beginnings.

Because, if I recall correctly, wasn’t Victoria Beckham being considered for a spot on American Idol, and then they passed on her? And I can’t recall anyone suggesting that Beckham’s accent was going to be too confusing for Americans, since she has such a nice upper-class brogue, but I do remember there being hints that Beckham didn’t quite “get along” with her female counterpart. I mean, my God — they even made enormous hay out of Kara DioGuardi’s “feud” with Bikini Girl.

Every once in a while, can’t we assume that women might be able to get along in the workplace and that Cole’s termination has little to do with how much Paula Abdul wants to pull her hair or smack her in the face with a well-stuffed pillow?

Super-Barack Notwithstanding, Feminism Needs a Shot in the Arm

Photo from Ms. Magazine of Barack Obama as "Superman" of Feminism

When Ms magazine placed Barack Obama on the front cover of its latest issue portrayed as the “Superman” of feminism (which isn’t remotely oxymoronic or anything), it got a lot of people talking, among them Daily Mail’s Liz Jones.  So the good news is, feminism is increasingly coming up in conversations.

Obama, for example, has involved himself in some hot-button “feminist” issues, most notably ditching the “global gag rule” that kept pro-choice counseling away from international family planning groups, but there’s still an awfully long way to go … and not just for Obama, who Jones takes to task for the specific type of woman that he’s put into powerful places.

From Jones’ Daily Mail Online piece:

Let’s look at those women hired by Obama. The new homeland security secretary, Janet Napolitano, is single, and regularly works 20-hour days. Susan Rice, the ambassador to the UN, is fiercely ambitious.

Every one of them, crucially, is past childbearing age. The message is clear: you can have this job, but only if you behave like a man.

And there’s some truth to this, even beyond the Washington.  To be perfectly honest, there are many days when balancing my career and my children, particularly as a single mother, is exhausting—and I am faced with the realization that I might well be a much better mother if I wasn’t a teacher and a far better teacher if I wasn’t a mother …

The UK’s Top Female Role Models: Not Who You’d Think

A new poll of women for mydaily.co.uk has revealed that the likes of Kate Moss and Cheryl Cole are non-starters in terms of influence when compared with the more ‘heavyweight’ likes of Baroness Thatcher, Condoleezza Rice and The Queen. I’m genuinely surprised by the results of this survey, which asked the question ’which woman do you find most influential’ – but pleasantly surprised. The women who make the survey’s list are women who have made a difference to the lives of others, rather than just being famous women in the public eye.

Harley Street psychologist Sue Frith told The Daily Telegraph that the findings of the survey are ‘very much substance over style,’ and went on to say that ‘this is very reassuring.’ She’s right. The mainstream media feeds us this …

People Getting Dimple Jobs to Look Like Cheryl Cole and the World Gets More Ridiculous

photo of cheryl cole's dimples

A recent rise in requests for “dimpleplasty” has been attributed to the charming dimples of Cheryl Cole. Apparently people have been flocking en masse (or at least more than they had previously) to their friendly neighborhood plastic surgeons in order to get their very own pair of those adorable dimples of hers.

Let’s briefly explore how this surgery is accomplished:

The dimples will also not look entirely natural, as they remain permanently rather than appearing only when you grin. The operation, dimpleplasty, involves making a tiny cut in the skin to create a small depression.

A stitch is then used to tack the underside of the skin down to a deeper layer and hold it in place. Once the suture dissolves, permanent scar tissue will remain to maintain the dimple.

Well that’s cheery. What’s more is that little is known by doctors about the long term effects of such surgeries. Since it’s a relatively new procedure, there is a good chance that these darling dimpled cheeks will eventually droop with age and become more awkward looking. (Call me terrible, but my first thought was if there is any kind of karma in the world, please let this be true.) Also, let’s all take a moment and think about the perma-dimple that is there whether or not the person is smiling? I’m getting weird visions of Stepford wives here.
