“The Whites Have Become Black” — One Theory on the London Riots

There are times when you hear an educated person from an older generation try to defend the casual racism/sexism/whateverism of their time, and while you cringe a bit — case in point, anything Clint Eastwood has said recently — there’s a degree to which many people forgive their ignorance due to their age and era.

Unfortunately, such a case cannot be made for Historian David Starkey. On the BBC News programme Newsnight, Starkey put his toe so far past the line it’s shocking. The panel included author Owen Jones, who wrote a book called “Chavs: the Demonization of the Working Class,” a book that Starkey cited at one point to explain his argument:

What’s happened is that a substantial section of the Chavs that you wrote about have become black. The whites have become black. A particular sort of violent, destructive, nihilistic, gangster culture has become the fashion. And black and white, boy and girl, operate in this …

American “Prime Suspect” to Feature Subtler Sexism than Its British Counterpart

NBC is set to premiere its own version of “Prime Suspect” starring A History of Violence‘s Maria Bello. Prime Suspect was originally a British program that aired occasionally (as is the way of British TV) from 1991 to 2006 with Oscar-winner Helen Mirren breaking in the enormous shoes that the bland Bello is being asked to fill. The show revolves around a female detective navigating her way through a male-dominated police force and, of course, investigating crimes like a boss.

In the original, Mirren’s character was constantly faced with workplace harassment from her male peers, an aspect of the show that the NBC showrunners seek to keep, just to a subtler degree. After all, one …

BBC Accused of Ageism for Trading “Older” Female Stars for Newer Models

According to the Mail Online, UK’s Education Secretary, Michael Gove has accused the BBC of ageism, saying that he’d rather watch Selina Scott (left) or AbFab‘s Joanna Lumley on TV than Holly Willoughby (right) or Fearne Cotton.

Many people believe that the BBC has a long record of age discrimination, the most recent incident being the firing of Countryfile‘s Miriam O’Reilly after the BBC had announced plans to “revamp” the show. O’Reilly alleges that she had been told to “be careful about those wrinkles” while on the program, and was eventually fired in favor of younger staff members. A tribunal has ruled that O’Reilly was, in fact, the victim of age discrimination and is expected to receive a £150,000 payout from the BBC, which has already apologized to her and offered her her job back.

Selina Scott herself spoke out about the BBC’s apparent age discrimination two years ago, saying even then that she lamented the lack of older female anchors and reporters on the BBC’s news channels, saying:

Destigmatizing Bipolar Disorder

Photo of Girl Half Smiling and Half Frowning

The word bipolar is, like narcissism, thrown around a lot these days. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’ve been asked, “Are you fucking bipolar or something?” when I’d get annoyed over smelly socks on the floor or not feeling like going out on a given night or just suffering from the monthly hormonal shit. And to be completely honest, I’ve referred to my car’s heater as bipolar (you digitally set it at a certain temperature, but man, 78 degrees is definitely not consistent in my old lady mobile).

Bipolar disorder is really not something to joke about, though. Once called manic depressants, those who live a bipolar life have a tough go of it, usually depending on medication and psychiatry to maintain some semblance of a normal life. This might be especially true of …
