The Post-Super Bowl Sexual Assault Roundup

Despite my lack of love for football, I was rooting for the Green Bay Packers during Sunday’s Super Bowl game. But it wasn’t because they seemed like the particularly better team (though I do love cheeseheads). No I, like many others, was so turned off by stories concerning Ben Roethlisberger and his lurid history of sexual assault that I couldn’t bring myself to root for him or the Pittsburgh Steelers. In the days that have followed, however, I’ve wondered if rooting for the Packers along the lines that they are a “better” group of individuals was particularly wise or based in fact.

In short, no. Packers players have an equally complex recent history in regards to their treatment of women; six players have been charged by two women for sexual assault. They consist of quarterback Matt Flynn, linebackers Clay Matthews and Brad Jones, fullback Korey Hall, guard Josh Sitton and …

Football Player, Junior Seau, Drives His Car Off a Cliff After Domestic Violence Arrest

What the hell is going on in San Diego? First we had a crazy gunman shooting children at an Elementary School, next a woman’s dead body is found in a local college’s men’s room, and now our beloved iconic Junior Seau, former San Diego Charger football player, has been accused of domestic violence.  On top of that, Seau has driven his car off a cliff.  (And has been released from the hospital, but that’s another story.)

The domestic violence incident was reported late Sunday evening …

Ben Roethlisberger Attends Church Now, Therefore He is No Longer Capable of Rape

The United States is sports-obsessed.   Here in San Diego, the football coach at SDSU gets paid more than our dean does. Let me just repeat that phrase so it can sink in:  our college football coach gets paid more than our college dean does! I hope my point has been made.

See, I was under the impression that college is about academics and that football was an extracurricular activity.  Isn’t a university’s main focus supposed to be, I don’t know, the improvement of one’s mind?   With all the educational budget cuts in California you’d think that the SDSU football coach wouldn’t be making $675,000 a year.  But he does. As students sit in overcrowded classes and with an unprecedented amount of faculty cuts, our school’s football coach is probably being fed grapes off of golden platters. OK, so I may be over-exaggerating about the grapes but still … his salary is ridiculous.  It’s this kind of stuff that makes me worry that my nation’s values are backwards.

An Update On Women’s Ski Jumping and How It’s Still Not Allowed in the Olympics

As you may or may not be aware, the Olympics currently only allow for men to compete in ski jumping. So, in honor of that blatant discrimination (and because the US Ski Jumping Championships were held roughly 30 minutes away from my home), I thought I would take a moment to describe what was happening on the front.

At the Nationals competition I watched Lindsey Van win her 15th national title. At one time she held the world record (for BOTH men and women) for ski jumping. Fortunately, since I’m a super celebrity (and I have an in with the cool peeps in Park City, Utah), I snagged Lindsey Van and chatted with her for a second after the competition to discuss where women’s ski jumping is.

Among other things, we discussed why women’s ski jumping isn’t allowed in the Olympics. She said:

“I’m not really sure why women’s ski jumping isn’t allowed. They’ve told us a lot of different reasons based on technical issues, but honestly I just think they’re scared to have women …
