Five Things that Concern Me About Casey Anthony

It’s hard to avoid coverage of the Casey Anthony trial if you live in the United States.  I mean, what a story, right?  Death is never a happy thing, but the senseless murder of a child is one that hits most of us on a visceral level.

And when you add in the possibility that said child’s mother killed her in cold blood, it grows ever more disturbing.

The nearly three-year-old Caylee Anthony disappeared in June of 2008 but was not reported missing until mid-July.  Noteworthy is that the missing child report was made not by Caylee’s mother but by her grandmother.

Before June of 2008, Casey and her young daughter lived in her parents’ Florida home.  After they moved out, Casey made excuses ranging from a busy work schedule to Caylee spending time with a nanny to keep …

Julian Assange, Wikileaks Founder, is Being Accused of Kind of, Sort of, a Little Bit, Somewhat Raping Two Women

Julian Assange—founder of Wikileaks has been arrested and is currently being held on rape allegations.  The way the press is reporting this story you’d think that they had no idea what the definition of rape is.  Both women in question accuse Assange of having sex with them without a condom even after each one of them demanded that he stop.  The first victim claims that Assange refused to stop having sex with her after a condom broke and she demanded he stop.  The …

A recent study by the Women’s Media Center, the WCF Foundation, and the Political Parity initiative showed that attacking a female political candidate based on sexist language results in a huge nosedive in the candidate’s approval ratings. You know, I’m actually really surprised by the fact that accusations such as “mean girl,” “ice queen,” and even “prostitute” evidently led to a 20% drop.

And if the Women’s Campaign Forum’s Siobhan Bennett has any credence, this means that all women with a drop of feminist blood should be supporting any female candidate at any cost … and this includes Christine O’Donnell, the surprise GOP Tea Party Senatorial candidate from Delaware.

Sexism Accusations in Advertising Go International

Outcries of sexism in advertising is not a new thing.  In fact, companies from McDonald’s to Hardee’s have taken heat for playing to very specific target audiences.  Perhaps the most egregious offender in terms of sexist ads, however, is the beer industry.

And now it’s going international.

From The Austrian Times:

The poster campaign features three bare-naked woman covering their cleavage with beer mugs – with the brews’ colours fitting the colour of their hair.

Caroline Kröpfl, a spokeswoman for the Hirter Bier brewery based in the Carinthian town of Micheldorf, claimed: “The poster shows three self-confident beer drinkers.”

Yes, I bet they were confident.  I don’t know, maybe it’s me, but I’ve certainly never hung around naked drinking beer with a bunch of girlfriends.  Well, not that I remember, anyway (I have a tattoo I don’t remember getting, either, though).

At any rate, that visual image wouldn’t shout out “confident” to me.  It would instead scream “DRUNK”. Although maybe that’s the point, and “self-confident beer drinkers” is just more PC than referring to them as a bunch of …
