Surprisingly, Team Obama

photo of obama pictures
I was in eighth grade when George W. Bush and Al Gore ran against each other in the race for the US Presidency. Bush became President and I was quite disappointed. That was around the time that I first began watching The Daily Show With Jon Stewart. That was also when I was first becoming strict about rules of language and grammar. I was a freshman in high school when 9/11 happened (taking a Biology quiz when all of the televisions flicked from the silent PowerPoint slideshow of reminders that followed the televised morning announcements to a scene of the World Trade Center with smoke billowing out of one of the towers—we all thought that it was a movie at first). Shock for those first few days swiftly became greater alarm as I saw the Bush Administration take advantage of the national and international goodwill and turn it in what I saw to be disturbing directions.

My high school was not a “political battleground.” In a survey my senior year, when incumbent President Bush ran against John Kerry, I was not yet old enough to vote—few of us were—but a survey of students (conducted by one of the notably conservative members of the faculty) found that 71% of the student body supported John Kerry, and 26% supported George W. Bush. And I live, by the way, in the Southeastern United States. In the Bible Belt. And while I was not, personally, a Kerry-supporter, I was a huge supporter of not-Bush (which seemed to be the general sentiment in the Democratic Party). Thanks to the overwhelmingly similar view of my peers, I was very optimistic about the 2004 Presidential Election.

I was, of course, disappointed. This time, Bush actually won the popular vote, and was reelected.

In 2008, I was so #TeamHillary (and I still am, really). I saw President Bill Clinton speak at my university (and though universities are supposedly “liberal-factories,” my college peers were much more evenly split politically than had been my high school experience). I was disappointed when she lost the primary to Barack Obama, who was, at the time, a relatively unaccomplished politician who seemed to be supporting himself through charisma alone.

As someone who too often relies upon charm to get what he wants, I am very suspicious of other …

The Today Show Chooses Kris Jenner Over 9/11

photo of kris jenner on the today show pictures
The Today Show isn’t a real news program – I want to get that out of the way. The Today Show is a morning talk show that sometimes talks about the news. And to be fair, I can’t think of one morning program in the United States, that is national, that is real news. The real news comes on in the evening. I can’t imagine Brian Williams or Stone Philips dressing up like Paris Hilton for Halloween and trying to deliver the news that way, but Matt Lauer did in 2006. Case in point, you know?

So why would it come as any surprise that on September 11th’s ‘Today’ decided to air Kris Jenner talking about her breast implants instead of cutting away to the moment of silence being held in New York for the commemoration of 9/11 is beyond me. Yes, ‘Today’ is set in New York, yes you can clearly see everyone outside those huge glass windows with their backs turned watching the moment of silence and not Kris Jenner, but again, ‘Today’ doesn’t really cover the news, does it?

When confronted with this snafu, NBC said that they did have a very lengthy interview with a World Trade Center survivor earlier in the program and another segment talking about memories regarding 9/11. That’s all well and good but the moment … the moment when the entire city is taking a moment of silence to honor those people … you talked to Kris Jenner about her boobs.

Even ‘Good Morning America’, who had Jessica Simpson co-hosting, cut away for the moment of silence. There is no excuse for airing the Kris Jenner boob segment instead of the moment of silence. It doesn’t matter how you feel about 9/11 – it is insanely disrespectful and it is a perfect illustration of our culture. Why is a 56-year-old woman, who has done nothing except pimp out her children, on the “morning news” talking about her elective plastic surgery? Why does anyone want to watch that? Why is that “news”?

It’s not news. It’s ridiculous, it’s pathetic, and it is embarrassing. But this is our culture; this is what we want to see. That woman gets paid $40 million dollars to air her family’s dirty laundry and their first-class problems to the world.

In one episode of the Kardashian’s show, the youngest daughters want to be home-schooled because they miss so much school modeling. The next episode, they call their mother after her breast augmentation surgery to ask her to borrow her $4,000 purses while she’s on pain meds because they know they’ll get the answer they want.

We have real problems in this country. We have real issues that are overlooked because of shows like this. “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” had more viewers than the Republican National Convention. In this, an election year, before you start pointing the finger at our leaders, maybe we should take a look at ourselves. This country chooses to watch overweight, (proudly stated) ‘white trash’ instead of the people running for office in this country talk about their plans for the future of the country we live in.

We have no one to blame but ourselves for the mess we’re in. People are so busy getting caught up on Kim Kardashian freezing her eggs, and ‘Married to a Jonas’ that they don’t pay attention to the facts of the world. It’s starting to show. We’re starting to fall apart at the seams. If it’s not poorly-staged drama, we’re not interested. Even this election has turned into a reality competition. Whoever can talk the most trash, point the most fingers, tell the most lies, and look the most glamorous will win. Forget about ‘best man for the job’ – we want a show!

Romney Taking Vaginas Into Consideration Regarding Running Mate

Word Search of Potential Romney VP Candidates
The names being tossed around as possibilities for Mitt Romney’s running mate are many and varied.

Actually, they’re really not … everyone under consideration holds pretty hard-core right wing views, which shouldn’t be much of a surprise considering that Romney himself has a past history of being fairly liberal on social issues, and the Republican machine obviously wants to keep that under the radar.

But what does Romney’s potential veep have to do with feminism?

There is this impression, see, that Romney needs to strongly consider a female running mate because he is woefully behind Barack Obama in the vagina-sporting demographic (unlike the House floor, we at Zelda Lily are very comfortable with the word “vagina”).  In other words, if they want to pump up Romney’s support among women, let’s get a woman up there with him.

Because, you know, that worked out so well for John McCain last election

Anyway, The Fiscal Times created a list of fourteen potential running mates for Romney, and three of those names are women: Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-New Hampshire), former Secretary of State …

Republican State Representative Called Obama a Liar … Or Didn’t … Or Something

Picture of Osama bin Laden with Doubter Lynne Blankenbeker

The recent death of Osama bin Laden has dredged up strong feelings in people all over the world. Whether you feel relief that the mastermind behind 9/11 has been removed from the face of the earth, are actively celebrating the death of a fellow human being, or if you are perhaps disturbed by missing evidence of a respectful Islamic burial, the Al Qaeda leader’s demise has been more than a blip on the radar screen for most of us.

Like many people, September 11, 2001 was one of the worst days of my life. I’d spent my life prior to that day aware that there was evil in the world but confident in the knowledge that it was far away and wouldn’t impact me directly.

Of course, I was wrong on that count. Dead wrong.

I personally felt relief at the news of bin Laden’s death, but ….
