The “It Gets Better Project”– Who Can Participate in Saving Gay Youth?

You might have by now heard of Dan Savage’s new initiative to help suffering gay teens: The It Gets Better Project (IGBP). Appalled by the rash of gay teen suicides that have recently been covered in the media, Savage decided that it was time to get a message out to the hoards of gay youth who were struggling to exist in a heterosexual world: it’s gets better, and we’re going to tell you how. Savage put a call out to his many readers, asking them to upload videos to the IGBP YouTube channel, so that gay youth could see that there was a light at the end of the tunnel, and there was a reason to hold on to hope. The channel already has over 1,000,000 views, which is extremely encouraging.
I was particularly pleased to learn about this initiative. There have been many pleas from celebrities, such as Ellen DeGeneres, Sarah Silverman, and piles of others, but this project is different because it gives a direct call to action: your story can help save a life. I find the idea of actual involvement — not just donating money or raising awareness — to be a true means of causing change, and I applaud Savage for starting this project.
Except, perhaps not everyone take part …
