Queen Bey

I just wrote an article about how all women are feminists…but are just afraid to admit it. I went on a huge rant about how female celebrities are doing a disservice to themselves and their fans by not admitting to being a feminist. Leave it to the Queen Bey to prove me right!
Beyonce is on the cover of Vogue UK’s May issues (looking fierce of course) and in the interview she says, “But I guess I am a modern-day feminist. I do believe in equality. Why do you have to choose what type of woman you are? Why do you have to label yourself anything? I’m just a woman and I love being a woman. I do believe in equality and that we have a way to go and it’s something that’s pushed aside and something that we have been conditioned to accept.”
She’s flawless. God, really….she’s beyond human. Beyonce has come under some scrutiny for her latest single “Bow Down” some say it’s anti-feminst….I say nay! NAY ON THAT! The song in question has the following lyrics:
I know when you were little girls, You dreamt of being in my world, Don’t forget it, don’t forget it, Respect that, bow down, bitches.

It’s the “bow down, bitches” part that is getting flack—mainly from Rush Limbaugh. Not that Limbaugh matters or understands anything let alone feminist ideals—but I’ll address his attack.
“She’s done a total 180,” Limbaugh said of the star. “Beyonce’s now saying ‘Go ahead and put up with it!’ … She’s going to call herself Mrs. Carter on the ‘Bow Down B—-s’ tour.” He added, “She got married, she married the rich guy, she now understands. She now understands that it’s worth it to bow down. And she’s passing on that advice.”

But what the song is actually saying is: bow down bitches that thought I couldn’t make it. Bow down bitches that thought they were on my level. It’s an egotistical song…now a submissive song. Shockingly, Limbaugh missed the point! He also missed the part where it says: “I took some time to live my life, But don’t think I’m just his little wife, Don’t get it twisted, get it twisted, This my sh-t, bow down bitches”.
Oh, she took some time from making millions on her own to be a wife and mother…that means she bows down to her rich husband? SHE’S RICH! Man, that Limbaugh…what a douche amiright?
Anyway, Queen Bey is at it again. She’s just being perfect, making millions, raising a baby, having a successful long term relationship in the entertainment world and Limbaugh is fat, frustrated, idiot that couldn’t get a lady even if he paid for it—he certainly couldn’t get Bey!
In response to his idiotic take on her life Beyonce had this to say, “I feel like Mrs Carter is who I am, but more bold and more fearless than I’ve ever been. It comes from knowing my purpose and really meeting myself once I saw my child,” she said. “I was like, ‘OK, this is what you were born to do.’ The purpose of my body became completely different.”

Ugh, stop being so perfect, Beyonce!

Yahoo CEO Mayer Takes A Huge Step Back

One of the major perks of working in the digital space is being able to work from home. It’s my personal dream. I love working from home. I get more done. I’m relaxed. I feel better. It’s just wonderful. It’s also great for parents. If you work on the Internet you can take your job anywhere. That means you can work flexible hours, you can work from home and keep an eye on the kids. You can go to school field trips and parent teacher conferences then work after.

In fact when Marissa Mayer left Google and became the “Queen of Yahoo” she was looked at as a role model for women. She was young, she was successful, she was creative and innovative, and she was pregnant when she took the reins of Yahoo. Everyone looked to Mayer to pave the way for women in this industry…until recently.

Mayer recently announced that all “remote employees” must relocate to company facilities. That means…no more work from home situations. This is completely backward thinking on the part of Mayer. But this isn’t the first time Mayer has set everything back.

After she gave birth Mayer took a short (two-week) maternity leave. She then built a nursery next to her office at her own expense, to make working and having a newborn easier. That’s great for Mayer…but most of us don’t have that option.
She then made the public statement, “the baby’s been way easier than everyone made it out to be.” Maybe the baby was easier because Mayer can afford a nanny with her $117 million over five years contract, a work nursery, and a penthouse apartment–that means baby can be with nanny in playroom and mommy can nap without disruption…again not the case for most working parents.

Jackie Reses is the H.R chief at Yahoo and put out a memo about the new policy stating, “some of the best decisions and insights come from hallway and cafeteria discussions, meeting new people, and impromptu team meetings,” adding tartly that if “Yahoos” “have to stay home for the cable guy, please use your best judgment in the spirit of collaboration.” Basically, please live to work not work to live.

What Mayer is doing is punishing all because of a few. It is true that not everyone can handle a “work from home” lifestyle but some people need it. So instead of teaching her executives to better manage their remote employees Mayer is just pulling the plug.

This is a huge setback for working parents, for the digital space, and for women in high powerful positions. You don’t have to be Stalin to be respected…but Mayer seemed to miss that memo.

Super-Barack Notwithstanding, Feminism Needs a Shot in the Arm

Photo from Ms. Magazine of Barack Obama as "Superman" of Feminism

When Ms magazine placed Barack Obama on the front cover of its latest issue portrayed as the “Superman” of feminism (which isn’t remotely oxymoronic or anything), it got a lot of people talking, among them Daily Mail’s Liz Jones.  So the good news is, feminism is increasingly coming up in conversations.

Obama, for example, has involved himself in some hot-button “feminist” issues, most notably ditching the “global gag rule” that kept pro-choice counseling away from international family planning groups, but there’s still an awfully long way to go … and not just for Obama, who Jones takes to task for the specific type of woman that he’s put into powerful places.

From Jones’ Daily Mail Online piece:

Let’s look at those women hired by Obama. The new homeland security secretary, Janet Napolitano, is single, and regularly works 20-hour days. Susan Rice, the ambassador to the UN, is fiercely ambitious.

Every one of them, crucially, is past childbearing age. The message is clear: you can have this job, but only if you behave like a man.

And there’s some truth to this, even beyond the Washington.  To be perfectly honest, there are many days when balancing my career and my children, particularly as a single mother, is exhausting—and I am faced with the realization that I might well be a much better mother if I wasn’t a teacher and a far better teacher if I wasn’t a mother …

One in Five Women Childless by Age 45

photo of black and white woman no child sad shadow sitting on a box pictures photographs

One in five women is childless by the time they reach their mid-forties, according to new figures showing that fertility rates have fallen to a 44-year low. At the same time, the number of women having children over the age of 40 has almost doubled in the last decade as women delay motherhood for longer periods of time.

The figures also found that, among younger mothers, marriage is increasingly being sidelined, with almost three times as many women in their early 20s giving birth while single or cohabiting than as part of a married couple.

Analysts have said the these new figures suggest that more women are delaying starting a family because they are focused on their careers, and because they take longer to find the right man. Rising property prices and the cost of living have also been cited as a reason …
