Trial Underway for New Hampshire’s Resident Psycho Killer

Photo of Kimberly Cates

Kimberly Cates, a 42-year-old nurse from a quintessential small New Hampshire town, was murdered last October by a group of angry, isolated, outcast adolescent boys. Now the alleged ringleader of the group—and the one who wielded the machete that left over thirty wounds on Cates’ body—is on trial for first-degree murder.

That would, of course, be Steven Spader of creepy-letter-to-local-newspaper-to-make-his-rantings-public infamy.

And while it’s not the three ring circus personified by the trials of Charles Manson and O.J. Simpson, coverage of the carnage perpetrated by kids robbing homes and killing a woman and seriously injuring her daughter just for kicks (Spader’s accomplice Christopher Gribble, whose first-degree murder trial is scheduled for February, told authorities that he “had wanted to kill someone for a long time and was disappointed he didn’t feel any emotion following the Cates killing”) is really pretty disturbing.

While video clips show Spader steepling his fingers and trying to stare down prosecution witnesses, I can’t help but be disgusted by the fact that Kimberly Cates, who literally …

New Hampshire Paper Refuses to Run Wedding Announcement for Homosexual Couple

Photo of Wedding Cake with Two Groom Figurines

Greg Gould has his roots in New Hampshire, and he was very much looking forward to the day when his wedding announcement could appear in the Union Leader, the local newspaper to his hometown of Manchester. Except, sorry,  it’s not gonna happen. Because he’s gay.

While Gould and his husband (he and Aurelio Tine were married on Saturday in Portsmouth) stressed like any couple about wedding day minutiae, they were floored to learn that their marriage, despite being legal according to the courts, was not evidently good enough for the Union Leader. Although same-sex marriage is now legal in the Granite State, it seems that the state’s largest newspaper is going to flex its …

New Hampshire Firefighter Sarah Fox Not Alone in Breast Cancer Battle

Sometimes the most tragic of circumstances can bring out the absolute best in people. So it is with a New Hampshire firefighter who has fought valiantly against cancer … and the family, friends, co-workers, and community members far and wide that have joined in her struggle.

It’s really easy to lose sight of what’s really important sometimes, and honestly it’s even easier to get caught up in life’s unpleasantries. Taking the time to say, “Wow, how amazing is it that this community joined together to support a comparatively young woman stricken with a horrible disease?” sadly takes a backseat to discussions on the Ground Zero Mosque or Guinness Book of World Records-worthy horses or athletes behaving badly or whatever.

I was truly touched to learn of the support offered to Portsmouth firefighter Sarah Fox by her brave co-workers. The Portsmouth Fire Fighters Charitable Organization does many great things, but their pinnacle as far as I’m concerned is their work on the Sarah Fox Cancer Fund.

From their website:

Portsmouth Firefighter Sarah Fox was diagnosed with breast cancer on October 9, 2007. At the time she was also 36 ½ weeks pregnant with twins. Twelve hours after her diagnosis the twins were born making a family of seven. While it wasn’t easy, Sarah fought through the many challenges and treatments that cancer brings and beat the odds returning to work in January 2009.

Just over a year later Sarah developed a pain in her hip which was discovered to be cancer. Sarah, her husband Matt, and their 5 children and extended family are faced with the fight against cancer once again.

Wow. At what should have been one of the happiest times of her life, Sarah Fox found out that she faced a potentially terminal illness. She fought the disease aggressively, appeared to win the battle, only to find out that her body’s war with this horrible disease had only begun.

New Hampshire Dems Under Fire for Hating on Sarah Palin

It is no secret how I feel about Sarah Palin. I think she is an incompetent upstart. I think she’s a hypocrite. I think she is an embarrassment to women everywhere who have fought long and hard to be taken seriously.

I would never wish death upon her, though.

Which is what New Hampshire State House candidate Keith David Halloran did on the Facebook page of Republican D.J. Bettencourt, who had a link up to the obituary of Alaska’s former Senator Ted Stevens. Stevens, a legend in Alaskan politics, died when his plane crashed en route to a fishing trip this past week.

From WMUR:

In response to the post, Halloran wrote, “Just wish Sarah and Levy [sic] were on board,” referring to Sarah Palin and Levi Johnston, the father of her grandson.

Halloran’s statement received a quick response from the state GOP, which said, “His publicly stated death wish for Gov. Palin and her family is abhorrent, and has no place in our public discourse.”

You know, I don’t always agree with Republicans, but they were absolutely right on this one. I mean, that’s just … sick.
