MRAs Are The Worst (And This Awesome Guy Knows It)

Like all people, men have rights. There are universal problems that impact both men and women, and there are some societal problems that adversely impact men more than they adversely impact women. It’s true.

But not at levels that are in any way comparable to the degree to which women have been negatively impacted by millennia of patriarchal cultures. It’s just . . . not comparable.

Feminists want to remove the pernicious patriarchal influence from the world—basically, to restore balance to the Force. That means that, in addition to the many problems that adversely impact women (and children, and the LGBT community, and various minorities), feminists want to get rid of the problems that adversely impact men. Patriarchy is the source of these particular ills, and feminism is all about curing it.

So men’s rights are pretty solidly covered by feminism, in case anyone ever wondered. And hooray!

Except that Men’s Rights Advocates (MRAs) exist, for some reason. They seem to want to only focus on men’s rights issues. And there are strong anti-feminist and misogynist undercurrents (some of them are hardly under) in MRA organizations and conversations.

My point? This awesome guy. He understands. And he talks about MRAs so perfectly.

Seriously go watch this video. It is short and perfect. (NOTE: NSFW for language)

I am a man. I am a feminist. I have no patience for MRAs. At all. If you think that there are situations in society, culture, and even the law that assign specific roles to men and women in a way that is unfair to men, then it sounds like what you want is feminism.

PS: I do not ever recommend scrolling through the “MRA” tag on Twitter. That level of infuriating stupidity is a lot to deal with in one sitting.

Becoming Adult

The idea of slowly transforming from childhood into adulthood is fairly new. Childhood itself is also rather new, since most normal working class lives used to entail children going into work as soon as they were physically possible. This is still the case in poorer nations, but is thankfully not the norm in America. Child labor is now illegal and school attendance is mandatory.

With the idea of childhood comes the difference between childhood and adulthood. Childhood officially ends at the age of 18. This would be about the time that the person graduates high school and enters the “real world”. Some attend college afterwards, prolonging the time before they must obtain full time jobs.

All of this includes the formal childhood vs. adulthood debate. Emotionally, becoming an adult is not the same story. Being 18 and having money does not make an adult. See Bieber.

The average age of a person when they enter their first marriage is 27, and children are likelier to be conceived after that. That means that ages 18-27, an individual is less likely to be forced into action, taking responsibility for their actions and acting like a true man or woman.

“What makes a man” or “what makes a woman” is also up for debate. The “man-child” phase is a quite normal stage now. This is normally a post-college male working a fine job, yet being more preoccupied with sports or video games than other life commitments.* He goes to work during the day, games all evening, and spends his time how he chooses. Is this the modern day bachelor- or societally stunted development?

Urbandictionary.com definition: A man by age but a child in mentality and actions. Usually an inability to get over the “frat boy” or “party boy” phase. Can’t have fun without a beer. Still relate to women as sex objects and are emotionally undeveloped. A general irritant to women and men that have matured.

There is probably a similar modern developmental stage for many young women. Peter Pan Syndrome may or may not be valid, but there is already enough irresponsibility to go around. American womenkind has fought hard for the rights to work, vote, and have an opinion. To not be property or less than. We are to make our own decisions and take advantage of the rights we were thankfully born with. This means accepting responsibility and not being the female version of the man-child.

*I do not condemn sports, video games, and the like. I don’t really care what forms of entertainment you partake in. Being entertained by a pastime does not make you irresponsbile. Choosing said pastimes instead of adult responsibilities does.

Where Is America’s Daddy Leave?

America is not so forward thinking as we would hope. Sure, occasionally gay people gain a few rights, and now we can reference those times we elected a half black President. This does not mean that America is any where near reaching the equality mark for any area of discrimination.

People don’t want to hear that we live in a discriminatory patriarchal world anymore, but the numbers don’t lie. Paternal leave is rarely offered in America. Women are in fact still penalized for maternity leave- after her fourth maternity leave, the CEO of Crest White Strips was asked to step down. Instead, she took her case to court.

In Sweden, the men are very much pushed into accepting their equal rights to a leave from work after a child is born. In 1995, Sweden introduced “daddy leave”. It had an immediate impact. No father was forced to stay home, but the family lost one month of subsidies if he did not. Soon more than 80% of men accepted paternal leave. Obviously, men could not as readily validate staying at work whilst losing money.

Money is a great motivator, but pride works even better. The pride that keeps these men at work when they have the paid option at to be at home with their lovely offspring is the same pride that makes them now accept parental leaves. Since the better option has now been normalized, men are capable of accepting their newfound equality.

This is not merely a fight for equal rights for women in the workplace, but also for equal rights for men in the home. The right to stay home with your child is not one afforded to most American men, and we are supposedly a superpower country.

Gender roles are so deeply, socially ingrained from birth that it seems we can do nothing to fight Sweden’s fight. Luckily, other countries are following suit: Germany, Portugal, and Iceland.

I take at this legislation as something that America is not good at: preventative measures. While this law has helped lower the divorce rate, raise women’s pay by seven percent, fight gender inequality, and probably more often raises strongly attached children, America can’t be interested in it because it is not a quick fix.

This isn’t just about parental leave, but gender equality in general. Only twelve of the five hundred CEOS of Fortune 500 companies are women. I know that national pride is important, but it is hard to be proud of my supposed super power homeland when they are not capable of doing so many things that a tiny, peaceful country of Sweden can do.

A Tory MP (who else?), here in the UK, has hit out at the ‘obnoxious bigotry’ of feminists and has insisted that men are getting a raw deal in many areas of life in the UK.
