So What’s the Dealio With This Herman Cain Guy?

I was having a conversation with a friend a couple of weeks ago when he asked my thoughts on Herman Cain.  I’m embarrassed to admit it, but my initial reaction was, “Who the hell is Herman Cain?”

His response?  “The Godfather’s Pizza guy.”

Which made me feel marginally better, considering the guy’s all over the news and I’d barely noticed his existence.

It did get me thinking, though, about how bizarre it is that a presidential candidate can pretty much rise out of the middle of nowhere and somehow become fairly popular.  It also  made me realize that I knew virtually nothing about Cain’s positions, and I have to tell you, the research has been pretty interesting on that one.

Mexican Police Chief Missing for Months

Photo of Erika Gandara

It should as no surprise to anyone that drug cartels have made many parts of Mexico violent, dangerous places that lead residents to seek refuge elsewhere.  What might come as a surprise, though—well, at least it did to me—is just how bad it is.

When a police chief, Erika Gandara of Guadalupe, can be abducted and remain missing for a month and a half … it’s, well, bad.  When she’s dragged out her home in …

Stephen Colbert Brings His Brand of Hilarity to Testimony on Immigration and Migrant Workers

Many politicians are in an uproar that a comedian, an effing comedian, graced their holy House Judiciary subcommittee on immigration, because clearly, sarcasm has no place in politics. (And that’s me, being sarcastic.  I would obviously be a poor fit in politics.)

Stephen Colbert was asked to testify about his ten-hour stint as a migrant worker last fall as part of the “Take Our Jobs” campaign.  The “Take Our Jobs” campaign opened up farming jobs to all Americans in order for them to get a taste of what being a migrant worker is really like.   Oddly, even after the thousands and thousands of hits to their website, and the ongoing anger and debates about migrants stealing jobs from American citizens, only 7 people took them up on the offer. Fact of the matter is, our nation depends on illegal immigrants to work in …

Immigration Scuffle: Jan Brewer vs. Hillary Clinton

Cartoon of "Mexico" and Obama Discussing Arizona's Potential
Jan Brewer, Governor of Arizona and vehement immigration opponent, has taken on Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in a recent report sent to the United Nations’ Human Rights Commissioner by the State Department.  Apparently, Brewer is steamed at the move toward “internationalism” and is trying to protect her state from charges of racial profiling, a thinly veiled accusation included in the report.

Brewer was pretty adamant in her, uh, request that Arizona’s immigration law pretty much requiring police to check the immigration status of anyone they encounter “enforcing other laws” be removed.

The federal government, however, views its legal challenge to the law as a prime example of how it’s addressing possible human rights violations.

From Yahoo News:

In a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Brewer says it is “downright offensive” that a state law would be included in the report, which was drafted as part of a UN review of human rights in all member nations every four years.

“The idea of our own American government submitting the duly enacted laws of a state of the United States to ‘review’ by the United Nations is internationalism run amok and unconstitutional,” Brewer wrote.
