The Gabby Giffords Gun Raffle Debacle

Photo of Gabrielle Giffords

Somehow, the outrage I expected over the poor taste vis a vis the gun target looming over U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords’ district in light of the life-threatening injuries she received during a shooting never reached the heights I expected.  I mean, people shook their heads in disgust, yeah, but there was no real freak out.

Which is why I’ve been hesitant to get into the most recent insensitive action by Arizona’s Republicans.

Look, I’m not a hater of the right-wing, per se.  I’m not, like, “You’re a Republican?  Clearly you’re an uncaring moron.”

It’s just that, as …

The Dangers of the Canadian “Right to Not Be Offended”

photo of canadian dangerous people pictures photos

Just like Americans, British Columbians have the right to free speech. Barring the oft-repeated “Don’t yell fire in a crowded auditorium” and other actively destructive examples, we may say whatever we like. Well, unless it offends someone. But not if it offends a transit official or “the man.” Put simply, the Canadian right to free speech is often superseded by the Canadian “Right to Not Be Offended,” but perhaps it can be even more accurately described as, “Free Speech for Underdogs Only.”

Urine Bandit Destroys LGBT Books at a Harvard Library

Someone at Harvard is not a fan of the gays—or maybe it’s the librarians.  It’s hard to tell, because while attempting to send a hate-filled message to the LGBT community, some moron left a group of librarians a nasty mess to clean up after.

It appears that the librarian/gay hater decided to take their misguided angst toward the LGBT community out by pouring pee on 40 books relating to gay issues …

Tyler Clementi: Another Life Lost to Cyberbullying

Photo of Tyler Clementi Playing his Violin

The death of Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi was both a tragedy and a wake-up call. This is perhaps the strongest example I can think of regarding the horrible repercussions of bullying, and I hope that people everywhere can learn a lesson from this about the importance of treating everyone with common courtesy, dignity, and respect. This should have been directly addressed with past tragedies like Phoebe Prince’s suicide, and the fact that this sort of thing keeps happening just makes my stomach hurt.

In case you missed the story, Clementi, a violin virtuoso, took his own life by jumping off the George Washington Bridge following the internet streaming of a dorm room homosexual encounter. His roommate, Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei, thought it would be funny to not just publicize Clementi’s sexual orientation via the internet but to actually show the details of an event that was obviously deeply personal to Tyler Clementi.

Douches.

On a positive note, Ravi and Wei, both 18, have been charged with invasion of privacy. Whoop dee doo. Oh, and let me reiterate …
