“Fiscal Conservative” Tea Partier Owes Over A Hundred Grand in Child Support

Photo of Deadbeat Dad Joe Walsh

Hypocrisy is unspeakably distasteful to me.

I think that’s most of my problem with the whole Tea Party movement.  The gist of what they’re saying sounds logical to those who aren’t educated in the ways of politics, and they use that logic to prey on the ignorant.

Their M.O. is to make themselves sound like an average citizen struggling to get by, and John Q. Minimum Wage has no idea that most of the Tea Partiers are extremely wealthy.  They collect the votes of people with legitimate financial struggles in order to put plans in place that will protect their fortunes, often at the cost of us low or middle class citizens.

It’s sickening.

Which is why I’m always kind of excited when Tea Partiers are caught with their financial pants down.  It gives me hope that the misguided people following them in droves will see the light.

Congressman Joe Walsh of Illinois, he who has accused Barack Obama of “spending like a drunken sailor”, allegedly owes well over $100,000 in back child support.

For those of you unfamiliar with the child support concept, there is a standard …

Kentucky Microloan Program Set Up to Help Domestic Violence Victims — But Who Decides Which Ones Qualify?

photo of money exchange

Kentucky has become surprisingly cutting edge in terms of helping out domestic violence victims.

From Women’s E-News:

The Kentucky Domestic Violence Association has extended interest-free microloans to 41 women throughout its 15 member organizations since 2009. The loans are pegged to savings accounts that match every dollar saved with two dollars, doubling the financial lift.

While the interest-free loan is truly micro–typically between just $200 and $800 –it can provide a crucial financial boost, enough to help a woman fleeing abuse meet the first month’s rent on an apartment or pay for transportation to a new job. At the same time it can protect her from a predatory or “payday” lender that can charge interest rates that go as high as 400 percent, taken annually.

So let me see if I understand this correctly. Women escaping a bad domestic sitch are getting money. From a Domestic Violence Association. In Kentucky. Okay, it’s official, I guess I’m moving there …

What’s even more notable about this program, funded by over $200,000 in grants from the Allstate Foundation of Northbrook, Ill., is that survivors are getting their repayments monitored by credit bureaus that usually won’t report these types of non-traditional loans.

That means the women not only get crucial cash in hand, their repayments are also helping to generate and improve credit scores, essential for such personal-finance basics as renting an apartment or buying a car.

The safety advocacy group has managed to report their microloans to credit bureaus by working through the Credit Builders Alliance, a 4-year-old Washington-based group assisting the nonprofits that serve low- to moderate-income individuals to build their
credit and access conventional financing.

The Credit Builders Alliance has 100 members that offer microloans. All the loans are reported to Experian, based in Costa Mesa, Calif., and TransUnion of Chicago, two of the three major credit bureaus.

So, wait a minute here. A year ago, I lived in a four-bedroom/four bathroom house. I had a walk-in closet. My children could ride their bikes around the block. The lilacs smelled like heaven in the spring. I am now living in the attic of my mother’s barn (it’s bad to live in an attic and bad to live in a barn, but combine the two, and …). My credit has been shot to shit by the shenanigans my ex-husband was pulling in the months leading up to our divorce. I was a victim of domestic violence (the ex was a decent guy in general, but Dr. Hyde came out in full force when he drank). You know, I could use a “microloan” … but does that mean I have to move to Kentucky?

ROTC Student Expected to Pay Back $80,000 After Coming Out as a Lesbian

photo of two lesbians one in the military

ROTC student Sara Issacson recently learned that she will have to pay back $80,000 in student loans awarded to her … before she came out as a lesbian.

From LezGetReal:

Sarah Isaacson was a student at University of NC – Chapel Hill when she joined the ROTC. She received some $80,000 in scholarships to the college through the military, and now she has to repay every last dime of it because she is lesbian and is open about her sexuality. Instead of serving quietly and in secret, always wondering when someone was going to find out that she was attracted to other women, Isaacson decided to tender her resignation from Reserve Officer Training. The decision is always between serving in silence and hoping no one ever knows you’re gay or lesbian, or throwing away a career in the military that you have longed to take up for ages.

Manufacturers of Female Condom Declare Stock Dividend

Which is a good thing, because it means they’re making (some) money!

The Female Health Company, maker of the latest and greatest female condom, FC2, has announced that a five cent dividend will be released to its shareholders.  The dividend, announced today, is not large but if you know anything about finance and investing, you’ll have the impression that they’re making money — even if it’s in bits and pieces — enough to return to their investors! The Female Health Company can be found on the major exchanges and as of January 15th, 2010, the closing price on the stock was $4.72 per share.  Almost beats the white out of market-monster AIG’s 52-week-low price of $6.60, which was approximately a year ago at this time. Point: if AIG can rebound over twenty dollars per share in one year in this economy, imagine what the FC2′s parent company can do in a year’s time, too! It’s all about the awareness, people.

What does this mean for women?  That this very awareness of the availability of FC2 is on the rise and that women are taking matters into their own hands and protecting the most sacred thing of all: themselves.
