Paul Ryan: A Legitimate Danger to Women’s Rights

Photo of Paul Ryan
I have to admit, I was pretty shocked when Mitt Romney announced Paul Ryan as his running mate.  I’d been almost positive his veep candidate would be female, in large part because Romney’s ratings among women are pretty abysmal.

Playing that card failed miserably for John McCain four years ago, but believe it or not, Sarah Palin almost seems sort-of-kind-of-at-least-a-little-bit acceptable when you take a closer look at Paul Ryan.

I knew relatively little about Paul Ryan when the news broke, other than that he’s a Congressman from Wisconsin and something of a golden boy in the Tea Party.

I received a forwarded e-mail from my mother today, however, that concerned me.  Deeply concerned me.

Now, the subject line was “5 Facts About Paul Ryan and Women”, and since I know what side of the political spectrum my mother hails from, I wasn’t surprised by its existence.  I get mass e-mails from all directions of politics (someone–I’m pretty sure it was my brother despite his denials–signed me up for Rick Santorum’s mailing list), and it’s always interesting to see rhetoric at work, to observe two completely different spins on the same issues, the same numbers.

In other words, I read all political mailings with a grain of salt.

Usually.

The e-mail I received today, though, a forward from Ultra Violet, was a bit different. It had the usual hard-swinging, attention-catching lines, but it also included footnotes … in other words, the wild accusations against Paul Ryan’s political stances on women’s issues are well-documented.

1. He voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Think women deserve to earn the same pay as men for the same work? Paul Ryan doesn’t. And the pay gap costs women and their families close to $431,000 over their lifetimes.

In a nutshell, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act is, as its name suggests, legislation intended to ensure that women have the same compensation opportunities as their male colleagues. It is, to be fair, very complex and not as clear-cut as Ultra Violet would have you believe.

That being said, The National Review admits that “many conservatives question the existence of a wage gap in the first place” and that “instead of helping workers, the Paycheck Fairness Act could actually make their jobs harder by increasing costs to the businesses that hire them.”

2. He opposes abortion even in cases of rape and incest. It’s not just that Paul Ryan has voted 59 times against a woman’s right to choose—which he has. He would even rather let a woman die than allow her to have an abortion. He’s supported a bill to allow hospitals to refuse to provide abortion care to a woman, even if she could die without it.

Yes, this is also true. Frightening as hell, but true. In fact, Paul is not averse to women being prosecuted for having abortions. Prosecuted.

From The Daily Beast:

This disregard for the exigencies of women’s lives—the dismissal of their choices as amoral exercises of “arbitrary will”—was thrown into high relief during his 1998 run for congress against Democrat Lydia Spottswood. Both candidates backed a ban on so-called partial-birth abortion, but Spottswood believed there should be exceptions in cases where a woman’s life or health is endangered. “Ryan said he opposes abortion, period,” reported the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “He said any exceptions to a ‘partial-birth’ abortion….

Is Alan Simpson Guilty of Being a Sexist or Just a Bad Politican?

photo of former US senator alan simpson

According to Fox News, women’s groups are calling for President Obama to fire former Senator and current co-chair of a federal debt commission board, Alan Simpson, for hostile and sexist remarks made by Simpson in an e-mail to Ashley Carson, the executive director of the National Older Women’s League. Carson claims that Simpson’s language showed that he had a “negative attitude toward women and seniors.” The result of Simpson’s inflammatory language resulted in the following conference call:

Friday, four women’s groups and Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz., said Simpson’s sexist attitude and misguided view of Social Security make him unsuited to inform decisions about America’s financial future.

So what exactly did Simpson say that was so inflammatory? That Carson should get back in the kitchen? That Carson didn’t know what she was talking about because she was a woman and/or a senior?

No, Simpson’s supposedly hateful and sexist comment compared Social Security to a “milk cow with 310 million tits.”

After sending the e-mail, Simpson then issued a jokey apology:

“Over the last 40 years, I have had my size 15 feet in my mouth a time or two. To quote my old friend and colleague, Senator Lloyd Bentsen, when I make a mistake, ‘It’s a doozy!”‘

But for Carson, the damage had been done.

Does No-Fault Divorce Harm Women and Children Disproportionately?

A new report from The Heritage Foundation claims that no fault divorce hurts women and children, and has led to a breakdown of traditional marriage and family values. The article was written in response to New York making strides to become the final state to adopt no-fault divorce. One of the points that the article focuses on is the strange bedfellows that this bill has made, as the National Organization for Women (NOW) and the state Catholic conference have teamed up to oppose the bill using the same logic that The Heritage Foundation is using. Specifically, the groups argue that, “the bill would allow judges to ignore cruelty that occurs in some marriages and also permit husbands to hide assets from the court, leaving divorced women and children financially unstable.” While this argument may be true in some cases, no fault divorce in fact often helps to mitigate these very same circumstances.

The Heritage Foundation cites the current fifty percent divorce rate, the decline in the number of marriages, and the increase in the number of people cohabiting and having children out-of-wedlock as the problems related to no-fault divorce. In addition, Senior Research Fellow Chuck Donovan, in a WebMemo entitled “Marriage, Parentage, and the Constitution of the Family,” states that, “children of divorce disproportionately suffer from such maladies as …

Sarah Palin Shakes up CSU, Stanislaus: Syllabus Includes Dumpster Diving, Violation of Public Disclosure Laws, and Slamming of Barack Obama

Photo of CSU Students Protesting Palin's Speech
Sarah Palin has brought her brand of crazy to the California State University, Stanislaus. Her visit and speech, organized by a nonprofit foundation and intended to raise money for the ailing CSU community, has created a great deal of controversy over what her speaking fee was … and why students went dumpster diving to get to the bottom of it. Now Jerry Brown’s involved, and it’s just getting ridiculous which, given the players, should come as no surprise.

From The AP:

The former Alaska governor’s headline address Friday night at the 50th anniversary celebration at California State University, Stanislaus has drawn criticism and scrutiny since it was first announced. It also attracted sizable donations for the public school.

Officials have refused to divulge the terms of her contract or her speaking fee, and some details only came to light after students fished part of what appeared to be Palin’s contract from a rubbish bin.
“Students who spent their valuable, precious time diving through dumpsters before this event in order to silence someone … what a wasted resource,” she told the crowd dining in the campus cafeteria.

“A suggestion for those Dumpster divers: Instead of trying to tell people to sit down and shut up … spend some time telling people like our president to finally stand up,” she said.

Oh, Sarah Palin. There’s such a thing as seizing a moment, and then there’s just coming off as looking desperate. She was clearly trying to carpe the fuck out of the diem with her attempt to twist the dumpster divers’ actions into a call to action for Barack Obama. However, since telling people to “sit down and shut up” does not in any way, shape, or form make a logical link to telling Obama to “finally stand up,” Palin just looks as laughable as ever.

It wouldn’t look half as silly if the students sorting through garbage didn’t find something—namely “perks such as first-class airfare for two and deluxe hotel accommodations,” which is what brought the state’s Attorney General (and gubernatorial candidate) Jerry Brown into the picture.

[This information] prompted California Attorney General Jerry Brown to launch an investigation into the finances of the university’s foundation arm and allegations that the nonprofit violated public disclosure laws.
“Jerry Brown and friends, come on. This is California,” Palin retorted. “Do you not have anything else to do?”
