Ann Coulter Sets Back Feminism – Again.

Conservative columnist Ann Coulter recently said, “I think all real females are right-wingers.” Coulter said, ”And I can tell you that based on experience — and my bodyguard will back me up on this — all pretty girls are right-wingers.” Super, right? Here’s more:

“But, I mean, the reason unattractive — I suppose — the reason liberal women are liberal is because they have to date liberal men and as we’ve seen from Bill Clinton and Dominique Strauss-Kahn and Anthony Weiner, we’ve seen how liberal men treat women. I’d be angry too.”

Well, let’s just take a look at how stupid those quotes are. Yes, I’m sure no conservative men have been caught treating women poorly, ahem NEWT GINGRICH. Surely, there has never been a sex scandal with a conservative man holding his shamed wife’s hand before the masses as he talks about how he likes to have sex with male prostitutes. That never happened multiple times. Also, Angelina Jolie, Ashley Judd, Charlize Theron, and Mila Kunis are pretty attractive women—and liberals. But maybe they’re actually just really, really ugly and we’re deluded into thinking otherwise.

Coulter didn’t stop there. “I’ll take 69 cents on the dollar, or whatever [the] current feminist myth is about how much we make just to have to never have to pay for dinner. That seems like a fair deal to me.” This comment is referring to the disputed wage gap between men and women, of course.

As for me, well – my head is about to explode. Why does this woman have a platform? Who gave it to her? Was it a joke? How is a self-respecting conservative woman saying “Yeah, that Ann Coulter—she just gets me.” Here’s the thing, Ann, women want to make equal wages so they can buy their own damned dinner. They don’t want to rely on a man for food, or shelter, they want to be on their own – or at least be able to MAKE it on their own, should they choose. That’s the entire point of feminism, last I checked. Not to have to rely on anyone – male or female – to make their own lives work for them.

Perhaps Ann could take a break from cashing her million-dollar checks and sliding into her skimpy designer dresses and actually read up on feminist issues and the complete lack of respect for women’s rights that is going on all over the world today.

But that might take away from her shooting her ignorant, hurtful, completely unfounded factoids on Fox News.

Is Motherhood Natalie Portman’s “Greatest Role”?

This is the title of a Salon article discussing the portion of Natalie Portman’s Oscar acceptance speech where she thanked her partner for giving her ‘the most important role of her life”. To that title, I’d respond, what the hell makes you think you have any say in what she considers her greatest role?

The author of the article, Mary Elizabeth Williams criticises Portman’s comment, which is referring to her current pregnancy, and her soon to be motherhood. Williams explains,

At the time, the comment jarred me, as it does every time anyone refers to motherhood as the most important thing a woman can possibly do. But the reason why didn’t hit me until I saw the ever razor sharp Lizzie Skurnick comment on Twitter today that, “Like, my garbageman could give you your greatest role in life, too, lady.”

When you’re pregnant, especially for the first time, there are a lot of amazed and awed moments in between the heartburn and insomnia. But is motherhood really a greater role than being secretary of state …

A Group of Swiss Men That Are Scared to Death of Women Hold an Anti-Feminism Convention

A group of men in Switzerland are afraid of women— like really, really afraid.  So much so that they organized the first ever anti-feminism convention that took place the last weekend of October. They kept the location under wraps, hilariously, because the organizers were frightened of the wrath they would receive from all those man-hating feminists out there (that’s me rolling my eyes).  Only those who signed up in advance and paid the $55 to attend, along with a group of journalists assigned to cover the event, were told where it would be held.  Me, I’m smelling  a little bit of paranoia in the air.  Perhaps the men who forked over the 55 bones to pay for this event could’ve stayed home and rented the first season of Mad Men or listened to Mel Gibson’s drunken rant to Oksana Grigorieva?  I mean, heck.  The environment probably would have been much safer, no?

But above all, my question is: who are these people and why are they directing all this anger towards women?  My assumption?  Somewhere along the line, they were hurt by a woman and have yet to recover – this entire movement is rooted in personal angst.

IGAF, the organization in charge of all this anti-feminist angst, says the meeting was ”an exceptional opportunity to make our concerns known to the public” and a chance to network:

Addressing the day-long conference was IGAF founder René Kuhn, and speakers from a German gender policy initiative, the Swiss men’s political party, an interest group for divorced men and European and Swiss men’s and father’s rights groups.

Ulf Anderson, a member of the Swiss-based antifeminist interest group IGAF (Interessengemeinschaft Antifeminismus) organizing the event, described it as a “very special” and “historic moment.”

I’d say he may have a screw loose.  When I think of historical moments, an anti-feminist convention would not make that list, but that’s just me. Mr.Andreson was also quoted as saying, “feminists have hijacked the word ‘equality’,” and today, “feminist stands for pure evil.” How would you like to have that dude over for dinner?  Talk about awkward.  Accoring to IGAF:

“The major goal is not to come to conclusions about anything but mostly to meet like-minded people.”

And when the organizers of this event mention likeminded, they mean of the mind to agree with the following:

“Opposing the feminist hatred of men, valuing the nuclear family, believing in the child’s rights to both its parents after a divorce or a separation, looking at the individual and not judging people by their gender, and accepting that men and women are different and counting that as assets.”

Coincidentally, or not so much, Switzerland was the last European country to allow women the opportunity to vote in federal elections.  The first time a Swiss woman was allowed to vote was in 1971.  In case you’re wondering, the first country to allow women to vote was New Zealand back in 1893.

It appears that the IGAF has grown in number from a mere 600 members to over 2,000 since the convention.  Scary!  And they say that movements involving women – no matter how indirectly – haven’t moved forward.  Huh.

New Study finds that Societal Attitudes are Preventing Women from Pursuing their Interests

photo of woman running swiffer sweeper pictures

A new study out of the University of Connecticut shows that it is larger societal attitudes, not just those of men, that are preventing women from pursuing their hobbies and career interests, particularly if these are in creative fields. Dr. Kathy Reis notes that the reason for this is that women were expected to largely be nurturing mothers and were only to work in order to provide for their families. Thus, if women want to pursue jobs or education that is considered less practical or “left brained,” they are often made to feel guilty for this choice and are derided as selfish and not looking out for the welfare of their kin. John M. Eger, commenting …
