More on the Facial Beauty Ratio:
Facial beauty truly is a matter of millimeters. Researchers — dating back to Leonardo DaVinci — have determined that we identify human facial beauty using a very specific ratio called the phi ratio or the “Golden Ratio.” We look for a specific mathematical ratio between the eyes, mouth, nose, jaw, forehead, etc, and this ratio is phi, or 1.618033…
The Golden Ratio occurs often in nature with things we consider to be beautiful, such as the sunflower and the seashell, and it was believed to be used by the Egyptians in the design of the pyramids and the Greeks in the design of the Parthenon.
Researchers at an institute in California have developed a facial beauty mask that you can place over a photo of yourself to see how well your own face conforms to this “archetype” of beauty. For detailed instructions on how to do this, click here.
We’ve taken the liberty of applying the mask to some of Hollywood’s hottest celebrities. How do they measure up again the Golden Ratio beauty mask? Are they really as perfect as they think they are? Check them out by clicking on the thumbnails in the gallery at the top of the page.
But what is this worth to you? Understanding how your own face varies from the “ideal” gives you more power, because once you know exactly how your face varies from this ideal ratio, you can use makeup tips and tricks to get closer to the look you want. [...] The Facial Beauty Ratio, aka ‘The Golden Ratio,’ and How It Can Make You More Beautiful [...]
This was supposed to be truth but a serious investigation on facial beauty performed by bith if the biggest institution on science natinal geographic and discovery revealed that if we “develop” computer faces with this measures not iinly we get an”ugly” face but also total deformed to the eye sight that was done generating 2000 faces by computes with the “perfect” measures so it is false
Hey Joe that’s very interesting! And nice to know that it’s false too!
This is not false, in fact is is true. there’s no such thing as faking mathematical measurements. There is a golden ratio, and if done properly, you can see whether you do in fact fit the golden ratio. I have friends and a fiance who does not fit, but I do. and it feels great.
Hahaha!
You only say its a true thing because YOU fit. I fit but I still think its garbage… because there are alot of folks that are beautiful and they do not fit.
I would really like to see a face that fit, because I have not had the chance yet. It would be really great if you would post the photo with the mask over it.
You can’t say its false, it’s a FACT, like 1+1=2, you know what a fact is right??? It’s so annoying when people try to contredict scientific facts. Anyway beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
it’d “beholding” her too if i can
Zooey,
You’re annoying that you can compare one plus one equaling two to that of this Golden Ratio. It is no more a scientific fact than Valentine’s Day is a holiday.
Well said Penelope…
well said zooey x
@zooey, Saying this way of measuring beauty is an undisputed scientific fact and then saying beauty is in the eye of the beholder is a contradiction. So… do you annoy yourself?
The problem with this “golden ratio” idea is that there are certain proportions that are more favorable, but they don’t make one more “beautiful.” Bases of beauty are almost purely personal and cultural. This ratio pertains to the evolutionary instinct in humans to automatically be more attracted to a face that is proportional because that indicates health and strength. Faces that fit aren’t necessarily more “beautiful.” They’re just less “deformed.” However, if you know of the idea of the Japanese blemish, you know that strange features make striking and often very gorgeous faces.
Really look at some of your favorite Hollywood actresses. They’ve had so much done to make them more “beautiful” they hardly look human anymore, and they also kind of start to look like each other. It’s creepy if you ask me. No thanks.
the only reason that physical “beauty” exhists it to broadcast your health to a potential mate. your body is driving you make babies with a person with strong/healthy genes to pass on to your children. just like the bird with the best song or the deer with the biggest antlers. it’s science.
however, i’m not saying this is conscious or how people see their loved ones….it’s just a part of us. we can’t deny all the work that nature put into us.
Actually there are several factors that go into the general opinion of male and female attractiveness. Some of these factors such as waist to hip ratio for females appear almost biological in nature as a waist to hips of approximately 60%-70% is noted in all known cultures (including aboriginal cultures such as amongst the Amazonian aborigines). Other factors of almost universal definition are symmetry of the body and face. The more symmetrical the more attractive.
I do not personally know of a bias towards the golden ratio if the defined facial relationships but am not surprised. That number appears all through both nature and our man made objects. Windows, floor plans, even the foundation for our homes and the shape of most of our yards falls in most case into a .6 – .66 ration of adjacent sides.
We seem to enjoy this relationship in things around us, why not in the description of physical attractiveness.
As to beauty in those around though I have to look much deeper. Physical attractiveness only is the bait. One person I would not have minded a romantic entanglement with was almost 4 times my age. We were co-workers and thrown together daily. They were quite definitely not physically attractive, but their knowledge, values, intelligence, outlook, desires, after I got to know them made them amongst the most beautiful people I have ever know.
Just as lust takes a moment to develop and love takes years to come to full bloom, so is the difference between attractiveness and beauty.
The dictionary gives multiple definitions of beauty but the two I consider most complete are:
the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations (as shape, color, sound, etc.), a meaningful design or pattern, or something else (as a personality in which high spiritual qualities are manifest)
and
an individually pleasing or beautiful quality; grace; charm.
I’m not buying this attempt to define beauty. While I do fit almost totally, it only means I don’t have an “odd” face. I have a friend who is very very beautiful and is often described as having striking features. She has very very big eyes and plum mouth: she would never fit the mask, but she’s someone of rare beauty, and almost everyone who meets her agrees…
I would like to see how that overlay looks on ugly people.
Facts ≠ beauty.
Beauty gives pleasures to the senses, and although mathematical symmetry has its definite beauty, the uniqueness of faces outside the mathematical equation bring a plethora of beauty, and pleasure to many. That’s why we can look into the eyes of the one we love, see the heart… and see the most beautiful one of all.
I truely believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You can measure a proportional face with a scientific method but that doesn’t take into account there physical features i.e., the shade and the condition of their skin, their eye color, whether they have little or full eyelashes, ect. I saw a documentary on humans natural attraction to each other and they stated that women become more propotionally balanced body-wise when they start to ovulate. They become more attractive to the opposite sex, no matter how unattractive they are, and they become more attracted to themselves.
Penelope,
I was just replying to those who said the golden ratio is made up or ”false” , I don’t think someone is more beautiful because they fit the golden ratio cuz, like you said strange features make gorgeous faces sometimes. But Phi exists and if you fit the ”mask” you are just closer to the archetypal human face…did you read the article at all???? And, no I don’t annoy myself but you knew what I meant right, you just had to be sarcastic…
Megan fox is hot
This is SO ridiculous. This measurement (if we WERE to trust it as reliable) depends a lot on the position of the photo. Symmetrical beauty is known to be a major factor of attractiveness to the oppisite sex but come on, this website could take a picture of ANY movie star and provided it was the right picture fit them into this little mould of what is ‘beautiful’. Personally I think beauty is CONFIDENCE, and all you people who have even bothered to measure your face on this stupid scale need a reality check. Life is NOT about HOW SYMMETRICAL YOUR FACE IS. Jesus.
I just want to say that I do fit the measurements, but I have never once been told I’m pretty, except by my mother of course. This thing is totally ridiculous. I have always been unattractive, and I know this. But I am a beautiful person at heart and I think that to be able to say that, is a lot more than a lot of people can say.
Well, this is another fine point of monogamy…. No Condoms! Get on the pill and let’s go for it!
: )
It seems like the main factor to beauty is youth, or having baby-like facial proportions. That is why wide-distance eyes and short faces are seen as more attractive in both men and women. That’s also why some faces can still be beautiful but not fit the golden ratio, as the person’s face may exceed the number and appear even more youthful.
This is also why I think in cartoons, the characters have large heads, far apart eyes and short round faces. Even though their facial proportions are extremely dismorphic to what an average human would look like, we still view them as beautiful. So our perception of beauty isn’t always logical.
Maybe for you, wide set eyes and short faces are more attractive, but definitely not in the majority of the US. People with narrower, longer faces like Angelina Jolie and Megan Fox are more often seen as beautiful. And youth is conveyed with smooth, even toned skin.
I fit in this but I still think it’s bs.
Donna, are you being serious? You think cartoon characters epitomize human beauty? That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.
Actually, both Megan Fox and Angelina Jolie have short faces and far apart eyes.
Thank you for that great tune! I really enjoy listening to it!
