Side Effects: A Preemptive Review
So I’ve been keeping an eye on this ‘Side Effects’ movie, a film starring Jude Law, Rooney Mara, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Channing Tatum, and I have to say, it looks pretty good. Steven Soderbergh directs it, and the screenplay is written by Scott Z. Burns.
From IMDB:
A woman turns to prescription medication as a way of handling her anxiety concerning her husband’s upcoming release from prison.
In the film’s trailer, you see a woman, the aforementioned woman from the IMDB summary as portrayed by Rooney Mara, prescribed what’s assumed to be an anti-anxiety medication. The movie, in my opinion, takes a good, hard look at the reality of prescription medication abuse in the United States, which is becoming an epidemic.
Chances are, if you survey all of the people you know, most of them will possibly admit (but then again, maybe not) to have taken a prescription anti-anxiety medication for medical purposes, or even foraying into what some consider to be “recreational drug use,” which, to me, is … well, I can’t even wrap my head around it. I’m afraid to take my mother’s prescription Motrins, let alone something that has the possibility of severely altering something about my natural, lucid state.
In the film, it would appear that there’s a murder, and while we aren’t really shown the action or the outcome, one can only surmise that Rooney Mara’s character is at the root of it. The trailer makes it seem as if Rooney exhibited behavior (while medicated?) that was ultimately unlike that of her natural state – it depicts Rooney in various states of undress being photographed, flashes of the “murder scene,” and possible suicidal tendencies on Rooney’s character’s behalf.
In short, the film has a stellar director, writer, and cast, and when you throw a controversial topic such as anxiety disorders and medications on the table, I’d go ahead and say that we could be looking at a box-office hit.
Thoughts? Why are you excited to see Side Effects? You can win a trip for two to New York City (hotel and airfare from the continental United States) with a $50 movie card and maybe watch it there. Answer my questions in the comments to enter.
