A flier was discovered in a men’s restroom on Miami University campus. It was a pro-rape flier.
The thought alone fills me with horror and disgust. Upon first hearing about it, I thought that it was a prank in extremely poor taste, akin to occasional comedians who jokingly encourage parents to strike their children. That sort of disturbing humor is not okay (seriously, I would happily immolate Carlos Mencia), but it is cause for only a certain type of alarm.
As it turns out, whether it is sincere or a sick parody, this particular flier indicates more than that some people have some disturbing concepts of what is humorous.
The flier details a number of “tips” for rapists and aspiring rapists, encouraging them to seize opportunities to rape (when women are walking alone or passed out), and giving advice on how to avoid getting caught (wear a condom).
It’s horrifying. And it fills me with rage.
But it is not surprising.
First of all, we live in a world in which there are evil people who write books advising parents to strike and beat their children. We live in a world where mobs of imbeciles rally and riot when the people who were complicit in covering up Jerry Sandusky’s habit of raping children are suspended from their professions.
But also, a lot of actual rapists to believe that most guys are either secretly rapists and better at hiding it, or that most guys at least want to rape but do not. It is disgusting to even contemplate.
If this was a parody, it was in poor taste and horrifying. If this was a sincere notice, hoping to be “helpful” to other rapists out there, then it is even more sickening.
Ladies (and gentlemen), be careful out there. Sometimes, people are the worst.
