Nicki Minaj: Feminist … Uh, Icon?

I’m not a Nicki Minaj fan. I know everyone else is but I just don’t get it [Ed. Note: Oh dear God, no; I'm not, either]. It’s just not my thing. But I recently saw a video of her and I was like … “Okay, okay, I get it.” In the video, Nicki (we’re on a first name basis now) is talking about how when you’re in her field you have to “be a beast.” She talks about how she was “trained” under Lil Wayne and when he walks on set and demands things and shouts things and doesn’t take sh*t, he’s a “boss.” But yet, when she does it, she’s a bitch.

There is one line she said that I felt really summoned it up well. She was talking about shutting down a photo shoot and how that turned into “No one wants to work with Nicki Minaj, we’ve heard about Nicki Minaj,” and she said, “I’m glad you heard, now when I walk on a shoot let it be of quality.” That’s a boss bitch right there. I don’t know how else to say it. She demands better because she feels she deserves better. She feels she puts out quality and she wants it in return. She then used a line that I will probably quote to the annoyance of everyone, “but if I had accepted the pickle juice … I’d be drinking pickle juice right now.” That is such a great way of saying “if I accept less than what I deserve I will continue to receive less than I deserve.”

She goes on to compare that when a guy puts his foot down he’s “bossed up” and there is no negativity associated to that, but there are tons of negative associations to being a “bitch.” And frankly, she’s right. Nicki Minaj nailed it, and at the end of the video she says, “When you’re a girl you have be, like, everything. You have to be dope at what you do but you have to be super sweet and you have to be sexy and you have to be this and you have to be that and it’s like … I can’t be all those thing at once. I’m a human being. I don’t mean to be ranting and raving like this. Don’t use this footage please it’s gonna make me look stupid.” In that rant she proves her own point. If a guy goes on that rant he’s an enlightened bossed up bad ass … if a girl does it, she’s an emotional bitch.

I was so excited to find this video and to talk about the awesome feminist that is Nicki Minaj. She’s like a cartoon character in real life … a gangsta Jessica Rabbit … then I found this:

“I will NOT let you people make me feel horrible for a f*cking HEALTH issue! That’s what got me in this mess! I shldve listened 2 the doctor!

I am so thankful to my true fans who understand WHY I couldn’t play #VFestival WHY I can’t play Dublin. Absolutely gutted However, if u have anything negative to say to me, please #EatSh*tAndDie – I am human. I was in jeopardy of losing my voice entirely and needing surgery on my vocal chord. If u can’t understand that, your mother’s a WHORE!!!!

I will NOT let you people make me feel horrible for a f*cking HEALTH issue! That’s what got me in this mess! I shldve listened 2 the doctor! Like people are hitting me telling me I shldve mimed. No! Then you woulda made a f*cking STORY out of that too! #killyaf*ckingself

My beloved United Kingdom, u know how much I f*cking love u! Ireland, I truly appreciate you. Barbz, thnku for the well wishes. All you do is rip people apart and when they’re dead gone u won’t lose a wink of sleep. #goF*ckYourselves”

Those are excerpts from Nicki’s twitter page. Seriously. She apparently went off on her followers after someone accused her of…well, I don’t even know what. Does it matter? She called people’s mothers whores and told them to go kill themselves. From what I gathered from research, she cancelled shows and people talked trash and she lost her cool on twitter. My first thought was, “Can someone get Nicki Minaj on Whosay so her people can monitor this stuff … and can a girl get some social media training?!”

The more I read the tweets and the more I listened to the video the more comfortable I became with what she did. Nicki is Nicki. She is not the girl next door if you’re in Beverly Hills, but she’s the girl next door if you’re in Detroit (don’t even leave comments yelling at me about dissing Detroit … I grew up there … I can say what I want!).

She’s rough and tumble, she’s ride or die; she’s tough, and if you follow her on twitter you should be prepared for this crap. You know who you’re a fan of. I’m getting tired of elevating people to these high levels and then turning it into a news story when they turn out to be just human. I still think Nicki Minaj is a great feminist and a pretty decent role model. Sure, she has some anger issues and takes to her twitter to vent, but what chick doesn’t?

I first compared Nicki to a cartoon character in real life a gangsta Jessica Rabbit … but here’s the thing … Nicki is just Nicki. That was a lesson I worked out through this article and I guess it’s a lesson everyone has to figure out. They’re just people. Celebrities are just people with more money and cooler jobs than you …deal with it.

  1. While I will say it’s cool what she said about being a woman, and she has a good point, I don’t really agree with what she said on Twitter. Celebrity or not you shouldn’t say those things, and you’re going to get attacked for saying them. A wrestler recently told someone to kill themselves on Twitter, and he was fined and forced to apologise. She sounds like a good feminist, and a strong woman who knows what she wants though, and feels she deserves it.
