Or, adults with mental illness happen to also be the kids who's behavior warranted spanking more than other kids. We think we can find the best fit solution to everything using scientific research, and we can't, especially when it comes to matters like these. Why can't we just use common sense and side with morality?

I remember reading a research study that made the claim that people who work past the usual age of retirement are more likely to be healthy. Or my theory...people who are able to continue working past retirement can do so because they are still healthy. Studies like these continue to test my belief in statistics.

I was well behaved as a child actually so I only ever remember being hit once. For the most part though spanking doesn't seem to be a very effective punishment. I'm not going to argue on if it's right or wrong, I'm saying it's ineffective. Taking away privileges is a much more efficient punishment. Whenever my niece gets in trouble, she loses her phone. It really does affect her that much. If I ever have kids, I doubt I'll be spanking them. As for if it leads to mental illness though, 7% is NOT a significant number. At all. It's barely anything, and could just be random chance. Physical punishment CAN lead to dangerous mindsets, but it's only when it's taken to the extreme. When spanking is brought in as humiliation as well, then it can do some damage. Spanking itself is mostly a physical act, and doesn't, or shouldn't, contribute to mental duress. If you go as far as to punch your kids, hit them so hard you physically mark them, or lock them away in say a cupboard, then you're really going to damage them. I will say I do have some serious mental problems, but it was the emotional abuse I suffered at the hands of the people around me, rather than any kind of physical abuse. When humiliation and other such things are brought in, it can damage, but for the most part I really don't think it does. The only thing it could really possibly lead to is a disturbing sexual fetish.

There isn't a line between spanking and child-abuse, because spanking *is* child-abuse. While I'm sure that one's bigger and stronger parent who is supposed to love and protect their child striking them can contribute to problems in adulthood such as depression, I wouldn't allow it because it's wrong. People argue that it's effective (which it isn't, and it DOES correlate with violent crimes committed in adulthood), but even if it were, it would be a moot point. It's wrong. Even if spanking or other variations of hitting one's children guaranteed good behavior, it would still be wrong. If you kill your child, you are basically guaranteed that they will never misbehave again. That's an extreme example using absurd reasoning, but not much more absurd than that which is used to justify corporal punishment against children--by those parents who even bother trying to justify it.

And, as far as legalities are concerned, it is mind-boggling to me that people are allowed to do to their children (whom they are supposed to nurture and protect) what would get them arrested for assault if they did to anyone else.
