In The Name Of Amina Filali

Amina Filali was a 16-year-old girl who was raped. When her story was brought before a judge, he ordered that Amina marry her rapist, which fell under something called Article 475 in the Moroccan penal code. It allows judges to contract underage marriages in certain circumstances. This one was contracted out of a religious stand point that a woman must remain chaste.

After the marriage, Amina committed suicide, and her death has prompted Moroccan feminists to act. Fatima Outaleb is one of those feminists; she sits on the board of directors of Union de L’Action Feminine, an organization in the Moroccan city of Rabat that is aimed at stopping discrimination against women. She is also in charge of a shelter that helps women victimized by domestic violence, rape, incest and other forms of abuse.

Fatima and other activists are pushing to get Article 475 banned. She says, “Just think of a perpetrator who is supposed to be punished and go to jail, instead he can marry that girl?  But the government is still debating it. It’s a violation of children’s rights, in the name of honor, I don’t know what, to put a girl in the hands of her perpetrator.”

Fatima says it’s important for Morocco to take this step in banning Article 475, because it has been seen as a leader in changing legal framework to be fairer when it comes to women. But this law, and the fact that judges can still contract marriage sometimes for girls as young as 14, is still practiced today. The loophole in this would be that the marriages are done with “the child’s consent,” but can a 14-year-old or in this case a 16-year-old rape victim, make that kind of decision? Hardly.

Fatima also says that Morocco needs to work on guardianship laws. As of today, it’s all in the hands of the men. “I am a professor, but I cannot sign anything related to my child. If I want to move my daughter from school to school, I need my husband’s permission because he is the one who is the guardian of the family,” says Fatima. But this does not take away from what Morocco has done so far, and according to her, “Morocco is still the leader or in a leading position with regard to the reforms made so far. But there are some obstacles. Public opinion, that’s the big problem. Sincerely speaking, the king on many occasions has been more courageous than all those political parties and other decision-makers.”

But it seems there is still a long way to go.

Mom Chronicles 7-Year-Old Daughter’s “Obesity” Battle in Vogue

Photo of Dara Lynn Weiss and Daughter Bea
Let’s talk about fat, shall we?  In fact, let’s just throw caution to the wind and talk about the potential damage parents can do to their children in the name of curtailing the national trend toward childhood obesity.

Or we could just talk about what a crazy bitch Dara-Lynn Weiss, who recently wrote a piece for Vogue focused on the alleged need for her 7-year-old daughter’s need to lose weight, is.

Incidentally, her daughter Bea was 4’4” and weighed 93 pounds.  She is now sixteen pounds lighter.

And, in case I haven’t already mentioned it, seven.

According to Weiss, Bea’s diet was recommended by her pediatrician, who felt that “she was clinically obese and could be at risk for high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes.”

Just for shits and giggles, I put Bea’s stats into the BMI calculator at the National Heart Lung Institute.  It came out as normal. While, to be completely fair, the CDC has a pediatric BMI calculator that does classify Bea as “overweight” considering her age, I think there’s more than meets the eye here.

To wit, here’s what Weiss had to say about Bea’s dietary habits … and her own actions undertaken as…

XXX Factor

X-Factor judge Tulisa Contostavlos has had a really rough couple of weeks: first she had a sex toy removed from her bag at the airport (which became a news story naturally) then her ex released a sex tape of her. Most people are saying that this sex tape wasn’t “leaked” by Tulisa’s ex, and that she didn’t “forget” that toy was in her bag. See, all of this coincides with the release of her debut single. Surprised?

Whether or not this was a publicity stunt isn’t my focus, my focus is on Tulisa’s behavior regarding the leak of the tape. Tulisa is suing for “breach of privacy” but she’s also not apologizing for making the tape. She’s not hiding, she’s not ashamed, she’s a little upset that someone let it out, but she owns up to the fact that she made it, and so what?

This is a departure from what we normally see when these kinds of things come out. Normally, girls act ashamed, they’re very angry; they even will say “it was his idea.” But Tulisa is saying, “I did it, it was my idea, whatever.” I’ve gotta say, I like this response. What’s the big deal if a girl videotaped herself having sex with her then-boyfriend? Why are we all so repressed about sex? Why is it that when someone comes out in favor of sex, in favor of “spice” or “kink,” they are labeled a “slut” or “saucy”?

Tulisa isn’t leaving a sex shop with two bags full of goodies like other pop stars, nor is she constantly singing about how much she likes having sex, and about male body parts. She was a young girl who videotaped an act between herself and one other guy. It wasn’t a group; it wasn’t even all that kinky. But because she’s an unapologetic female who did something a bit naughty, she’s a news story.

Everyone needs to just relax. Girls sometimes don’t wait until they’re married anymore, and guess what … women enjoy sex. It’s a good thing, it’s something we should embrace, and it’s the repression of sex and the punishment that comes with being open that leads to a lot of girls having issues with themselves. So lets hope this unapologetic trend continues!

Female Action Heroes

Lisbeth Salander, Columbiana, Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider, The Tourist, and Salt, and Jennifer Lawrence in Hunger Games … girls are kicking butt lately! Some say it’s the fourth wave of feminism coming; people are rushing to see girls kick butt and they’re becoming inspired by it, too.

Women are the new action heroes, assassins, spies, hired guns, and even defenders against the occult in today’s films. And unless you’ve been under a rock, this is a pretty big cultural shift in the way we view gender roles. Some may say is a marketing shift – “girls are hot when they’re tough” – but even so: that’s another point for feminism. The days of “speak when spoken to” and “your opinion doesn’t matter because you’re not as good as a man” are gone. These girls can take most men out with a single punch.

And there’s more to it than just being tough – these girls are also extremely smart. In most action movies, the guys fight their way out of a problem, or they call the smart guy sitting at a laptop to navigate them out. These girls don’t need the guy at the laptop: they’ll figure it out themselves and if it comes down to it they’re not afraid to get their hands dirty.

It’s a really awesome step forward for feminism and for Hollywood because let’s be honest, as bad as Jonah Hex was, it’s still better to see Megan Fox kicking butt than it was to see Josh Brolin.
