Ann Coulter Sets Back Feminism – Again.

photo of ann coulter pictures photos pics
Conservative columnist Ann Coulter recently said, “I think all real females are right-wingers.” Coulter said, ”And I can tell you that based on experience — and my bodyguard will back me up on this — all pretty girls are right-wingers.” Super, right? Here’s more:

“But, I mean, the reason unattractive — I suppose — the reason liberal women are liberal is because they have to date liberal men and as we’ve seen from Bill Clinton and Dominique Strauss-Kahn and Anthony Weiner, we’ve seen how liberal men treat women. I’d be angry too.”

Well, let’s just take a look at how stupid those quotes are. Yes, I’m sure no conservative men have been caught treating women poorly, ahem NEWT GINGRICH. Surely, there has never been a sex scandal with a conservative man holding his shamed wife’s hand before the masses as he talks about how he likes to have sex with male prostitutes. That never happened multiple times. Also, Angelina Jolie, Ashley Judd, Charlize Theron, and Mila Kunis are pretty attractive women—and liberals. But maybe they’re actually just really, really ugly and we’re deluded into thinking otherwise.

Coulter didn’t stop there. “I’ll take 69 cents on the dollar, or whatever [the] current feminist myth is about how much we make just to have to never have to pay for dinner. That seems like a fair deal to me.” This comment is referring to the disputed wage gap between men and women, of course.

As for me, well – my head is about to explode. Why does this woman have a platform? Who gave it to her? Was it a joke? How is a self-respecting conservative woman saying “Yeah, that Ann Coulter—she just gets me.” Here’s the thing, Ann, women want to make equal wages so they can buy their own damned dinner. They don’t want to rely on a man for food, or shelter, they want to be on their own – or at least be able to MAKE it on their own, should they choose. That’s the entire point of feminism, last I checked. Not to have to rely on anyone – male or female – to make their own lives work for them.

Perhaps Ann could take a break from cashing her million-dollar checks and sliding into her skimpy designer dresses and actually read up on feminist issues and the complete lack of respect for women’s rights that is going on all over the world today.

But that might take away from her shooting her ignorant, hurtful, completely unfounded factoids on Fox News.

What’s Really Going On At The Zoo?

photo of la zoo pictures photos
Every child loves going to the zoo – it’s a childhood tradition. Parents want to expose their kids to wonderful adventures, to broaden their minds. That’s the reason they go to the zoo. These children get the chance to see animals they would most likely never see in their lifetime, unless the parent was wealthy enough to travel to all corners of the globe in search of That Elusive Species.

But what are parents really exposing their children to? I recently visited the Los Angeles zoo. I did this because I know that celebrity Betty White is on the board of directors and is an animals rights’ activist. I thought I would be visiting more of a sanctuary than a zoo. I was excited to see the new elephant enclosure, as it is one that is supposedly the best in the country. When I arrived I was quickly reminded why I don’t enjoy visiting zoos.

The L.A. Zoo is beautiful, the weather is generally flawless, and the animals are diverse. Most boast of being “the last of their kind,” and they house several “almost extinct” animals. That part of zoos I do enjoy. To me, they are a necessary evil. Yes, despite the fact that these animals are in cages, and out of their natural habitat and climate, they are safe from poachers.

As I walked to the elephant enclosure, the first sound I heard was the snapping of the electric fence. I saw one male elephant standing there. He made his way over to a trainer, who threw him some cucumbers and then he sauntered back to wait by his door. I walked further on and saw that two female elephants were kept on the other side of the very large enclosure. One female was constantly bobbing her head, and as I saw this, I remembered that hearing this is a sometimes-present neurological behavior in captive elephants. I was saddened by her behavior and upset that they were being  kept apart. I have a deep love and affinity for all animals, but I feel especially connected to elephants.

I walked past the chimpanzee enclosure to see their area to be very crowded, and the inhabitants sat cuddled with each other, not using any of their supplied “enhancement” tools. I remember thinking, “Those straps are so close together, how can they swing at all?”

What got to me the most, and what really prompted me to write this article and do the associated research, was the Sumatran Tiger. I heard her calling from another area in the zoo, which I found to be odd as I’ve never really heard such an active tiger before. I walked to the enclosure where I saw her pacing. She was doing figure eights between her two cubs that were at separate ends of her area. I knew right away, she was looking for another cub. Calling for a lost cub, circling, counting, trying to find her lost baby. I Googled the tigers and found that six months prior to my visit, a Sumatran tiger cub did indeed die. I walked through the zoo hearing that mother calling and my heart wrenched with every call she made. There was no way that it couldn’t have been her.

I was furious, positively fuming. I immediately contacted animal experts and the L.A. Zoo itself. The first person I spoke to was Jason Jacobs of the L.A. Zoo. I jumped at the chance to ask him about the elephant behavior, and he informed me that one of the females was a former circus animal, and that their young male also bobs his head. Jacobs told me that when a trainer comes to the gate the young male elephant will bob his head in an “anticipatory way” the same way a dog would wag its tail. He also informed me that the zoo is working on the human/elephant conflict in several countries. Farmers are being eaten out of crops by elephants and the zoo is helping educate the farmers in ways to protect their crops without violence toward the animals.

Jacobs also told me that the chimpanzees have a lot of enrichment, and that the tiger was pacing and …

Liz Taylor: A Real Feminist

photo of young black and white liz taylor pictures photos pics
It’s coming up on the year anniversary of Liz Taylor’s death, and there’s a new book out by M.G. Lord called The Accidental Feminist: How Elizabeth Taylor Raised Our Consciousness and We Were Too Distracted by Her Beauty to Notice. The book itself is getting a lot of criticism from readers, most of who are saying that Lord was just trying to capitalize on Taylor’s passing and his book is flimsy and not well-thought out. But this article isn’t really going to be about the book, it’s going to be about Elizabeth Taylor and how yes, she actually was a feminist.

There is no doubt in my mind that Liz was a feminist. I’ve watched countless documentaries and read biographies and her strength was always so astounding to me. She endured so much illness, heartbreak, and the death of close friends. She was at the forefront of so much tragedy. One story that always stuck with me was when Liz threw a party at her house, her good friend, Monty Clift, drove away later that night and got into an accident on her property. Liz heard the crash and ran to his car. Clift was inside and paparazzi were already taking photos of him. Liz ran to the car, grabbed Clift, looked at the photographers and said, “If one single picture is published I’ll make sure you never work in this industry again.” Not one picture was published. Liz was that powerful and that protective of those she loved.

There are endless accounts of Rock Hudson, James Dean, and Montgomery Clift always hanging around Liz, and every one said it’s because she was so loving and motherly to them. They all had a secret, they all …

Komen Foundation’s Continued Funding of Planned Parenthood Discussion-Worthy

Susan G. Komen Logo
After an outcry from scores of angry women (my technology-challenged mother being one of them … she actually made me walk her through the steps of how to sign an online petition because she felt so strongly about it), the Susan G. Komen For the Cure foundation has done a 180 on its plan to sever ties with Planned Parenthood, and all is right with the world, right?

Not so fast …

Approximately $600,000 of the foundation’s money has been used each year to pray for breast cancer screening.  You don’t need me to tell you that screening leads to early detection, which leads to early treatment, which leads to a ridiculously high percentage of successful cures (if breast cancer is caught early enough, we are in fact talking cure, not remission).

What kind of highly public foundation makes a big thing about being “for the cure” (puts it into its very name, in fact) and then intentionally pulls money from the very demographic of women that need it most considering that they’re the least likely to get regular medical attention?

That’s got to be among the most asinine things I’ve ever heard.

And, yeah, it’s the A-word.

From The Atlantic:

Komen, the marketing juggernaut that brought the world the ubiquitous pink-ribbon campaign, says it cut off Planned Parenthood because of a newly adopted foundation rule prohibiting it from …
