Desperate For a Little Girl? Start Eating Your Veggies!

I am continually amazed by the lengths people will go to in order to attempt to preselect the sex of their unborn children, and I won’t lie: I think it’s a little too controlling and definitely slightly weird.  An acquaintance of mine wanted a girl so badly that she would only have missionary style sex during ovulation, would try her very hardest not to have an orgasm, and afterwards would lay with her legs sticking straight up, all because some …

… website said that was the best way to ensure a girl.

She did end up with a girl and swears that all the kooky things she did made her little female one possible.  Me, I doubt that.  I think it was a happy coincidence.

If only she had been aware of a recent Dutch study that selected 32 woman to eat a “little girl diet” rich in fruits in vegetables, she probably would have taken advantage of that, too.  The test women ate foods like feta salad, veggie stews, and rice. Foods with high levels of potassium like bananas and potatoes, that is believed to lead to boys, were greatly restricted.

Out of the 32 woman only 6 of them conceived boys and 26 had girls. Can you believe that!?

Apart from eating a strict diet, the woman were asked to attempt to conceive during a certain point of ovulation.  Researchers believe that the diet played a more crucial part in the outcome of the sex of these woman’s babies.

I’d say the results of this study are astounding, to say the least.  If you’re in the market for a baby girl, forget the age old myth of drab missionary sex, start chowing down on some fruits and veggies – but avoid those potatoes like the plague, ladies.

  1. I saw no link to the actual study for proper evaluation, but seriously? They had two BIG experimental factors (diet and conception time) and just *decided* that it was diet that made a difference? Not good.
    .
I mean, if you’re trying to get girls, sure, do all the various sorts of things you can think of to make it work.
But if you’re trying to do a scientific study which proves the veracity of a method to get girls – PICK ONE VARIABLE!

    • That I did see and click, but it merely brought me to a UK news article about the study (which typically put a lot of their own spin on results). From the news page, I did not find any link to the actual scientific results of the study.

    • Hah, right?! I mean, I would imagine that the vaginal environment would have some bitty effect, but honestly there’s only so much a woman trying to conceive could ever do. She only has the XX chromosomes.

  2. Pregnant with a girl here. I eat a reasonably healthy diet with minimal processed foods, and have for years. I am also originally from Idaho. (Famous potatoes anyone?) These two things mean I have eaten a TON of potatoes and continue to do so. Probably at least two or three times a week. I would think that’s a lot of potatoes. Also, didn’t do anything weird or unusual to try for a girl, or time it to a certain point in ovulation. Besides, doesn’t the gender determination come from the sperm? Wouldn’t that mean you’d have to stop feeding the male partner potatoes?

    • sperm with x chromosomes and sperm with y chromosomes are both ‘donated’. It is not *completely* preposterous to suggest that they act differently in some way and the actions of the woman might affect which are likely to make it in to the egg.

  3. I remember talking in biology class that it is possible to be more likely to conceive a child of one sex or the other. There can be times during a woman’s cycle where it is easier for an X chromosome to get be fertilized or vice versa. There are also certain conditions in the uterus, like whether it’s too alkaline or acidic that can make it more likely that you may have one sex over the other. I think both of these situations are very slight chances though and everyone should be very happy if they have a mostly healthy and able to live baby no matter if it’s a boy or a girl.

    • I remember when I was acquainted with macrobiotics, they would stress the importance of being in an alkaline ph range. I also remember reading John Lennons last interview. Him and Yoko were trying to conceive with difficulty,a macrobiotic practitioner told them no caffeine, drugs or alcohol, and very little animal products or sugar. Once they became more alkaline, about 45 days, they would be pregnant. John said bingo,45 days later Yoko was preggars.

  4. Well the X sperm live longer whereas Y sperm swim faster, so if there is something which effects your cervical mucus where it is too thick to let many sperm through for awhile, then maybe eating veggies could have somethign to do with it.
