Cote de Pablo is the latest to admit to a bad-boy hang up. The NCIS star spoke recently with Prevention about the balance that her boyfriend, actor Diego Serrano, brings to her life … despite the fact that he’s “the worst influence” she’s ever had.
Ah, words from the celeb world that us …
… common folk can relate to …
“Every once in a while, [Serrano] turns to me and goes, ‘Live a little.’ I’ll have chicken with broccoli and he’s like, ‘What about the chocolate cake?’ If it weren’t for him, I’d be the most boring person in Los Angeles.”
She and Serrano are a nice mix in that way. “My partner’s idea of fun is to dress up, get in the car, pump the music, go clubbing. I could not be further away from that. I love being at home, having friends over,” she says. “So, we balance each other.”
While de Pablo also talks about her weight struggles—she gained 15 pounds as a result of switching from the pill to Depo-Provera—it is her attitude toward Serrano that stands out most.
Reading de Pablo’s interview was especially interesting to me, as I was talking recently to a friend about women with a bad-boy complex (he also opined that this is especially true for teachers, who have a tendency to let their wild side out more when off-duty because most are so uber-focused when in a classroom, but that’s a different story altogether).
I used to have a wicked thing for the naughty guys. I think it involved trying to help and change them, although there’s no doubt that sheer excitement was part of it. I eventually got hurt one time too many and contemplated a nunnery until I met and married a “nice guy” … and ended up hurt worse than anyone had ever hurt me before. Yeah, give me an asshole any day of the week—they’re usually at least honest about what jerks they are.
So on a personal level, it is refreshing to hear the story of an unlikely couple that somehow makes it work. How healthy must Cote de Pablo be to recognize this … I am so impressed with both her and Diego Serrano for being willing to accept each other as is and appreciate the delicate balance that their two mindsets necessitate.
Any of you have stories to share about being an “odd couple” that didn’t work out … or surprisingly did?

A guy who enjoys taking his woman clubbing, and reminds her to let go sometimes and try something fun just for the sake of it (as per cake).
I’m not convinced this counts as ‘bad boy syndrome’.
I am with you on this one. He doesn’t sound like a bad boy at all. Now, if we were talking Billy Bob Thornton, that’d be a different story…
Eating chocolate cake makes one a “bad boy” now? It’s cake, for pete’s sake. I think that makes my own boyfriend akin to a convicted felon. When I think of a bad boy complex, I think of insecure women who get themselves into destructive relationships with bad people, not a lady whose boyfriend encourages her to live her life to the fullest. Not the same thing at all.
Yeah, I don’t think this chocolate cake thing equates to a bad boy problem. Ask any one of Charlie Sheen’s exes what attracted them to him. That would probably be a more interesting article.
