The National Organization for Women is contending that Hooters violates California laws regarding minors and sexual entertainment by allowing children into their restaurants. The waitresses’ trademark, skimpy orange and white outfits create an atmosphere similar to that of a strip club, according to NOW: “Hooters are staffed by and large by young women in tight tops and orange short shorts, which NOW says puts sex appeal on a menu that is not suitable for youngsters.” Now has asked three District Attorneys to look into whether Hooters is in compliance with state laws.
While I understand that NOW is trying to protect women from …
… being objectified, the way they are going about this campaign seems more like the way Evangelical Christians would, condemning Hooters for their supposed immorality. I have seen female employees dressed in far less at coffee shops, regular restaurants, bookstores, malls, etc., even in stores geared at young people and have never heard any large scale complaints about this. Sure, the outfits that Hooters girls wear are a bit sexist, but that’s pretty much the whole point of Hooters and the outfits they wear are no worse than what you see a lot of women wearing out in the street. As the one commenter on the website I found the story on put it (this confirms that this is really a non-story, since Hooters hasn’t even bothered to put out a response): “This is so lame.. if you don’t want your kids to see their uniforms DON’T GO TO THE ESTABLISHMENT we don’t need to flex our muscle on this. Often kids can see worse just by watching TV.” Indeed, Hooters is for the most part no worse than any other restaurant. Yes, it has some sexualized elements, but so does all of a society that still values male pleasure above just about everything else. Hooters does not try to hide their product, so parents already know what it will be like before they go there. If they don’t want their children to see it, they don’t need to take them. NOW knows this, but they are willing to take the sensationalist angle, as they are more interested in getting Hooters closed down to make a point than they are actually outraged about the poor children’s eyes.

And the Hooters I’ve been in haven’t even been that risque. The women are always wearing flesh-colored tights under their short shorts and the tank tops are not that revealing. I’ve always thought Hooters under delivers on its promises because it’s so tame. I’ve been to Irish restaurants that were far more offensive with the waitresses in Catholic school girl outfits and thigh highs. Personally, I think Outback’s waitstaff with their “let me sit down and have a convo” approach is far more harmful to children. How freaky is it to have a complete stranger sit next to you and start yelling salmon specials?
I don’t think most kids even notice this kind of thing. It’s adults putting sexual interpretations on children who are often too young to comprehend what sexual behaviors or ways of dressing are. I doubt they are particularly harmed because of a woman dressing a certain way. Likewise, I don’t think the Hooters waitresses are harmed. They know what they’re signing up for when they take the job, and they are warned in advance that they might be groped on the job. If they aren’t comfortable with that, they can work at a normal restaurant. This is like making prostitution illegal because it ‘protects’ women, when in reality it just drives things underground where they’re more dangerous.
.
Maybe we should just accept that some women prefer to make money based on their sexual attractiveness and make sure that we’re giving them the legal avenues and protections they need in order to be safe in their jobs, rather than telling them what to do?
1. *Facepalm*
2. I assume they are trying to get Hooters down because according to *their* version of feminism, that place is wrong.
So, beaches are now adult-only?
Up here we’ve got a woman trying to sue McDonalds to get them to stop making Happy Meals, because she says her kids constantly ask for them, and she can’t handle the begging.
THIS IS WHY SOME PEOPLE SHOULDN’T HAVE CHILDREN!
If you can’t say ‘no’, don’t have kids!
If you can’t go somewhere kid-friendly instead of hooters sometimes, don’t have kids!
If you can’t take care of yourself, let alone someone else, don’t have kids!
The government should not be responsible for parenting.
Kai, I’ve read about that women and MickeyDee’s. People are so freaking stupid anymore.
The worst part? When I expressed outrage at the stupidity and irresponsibility out loud in the lunchroom at work, three voices spoke up to agree with the lawsuit – that since happy meals are unhealthy, they provide too much temptation and should be banned.
It’s disgusting. I couldn’t believe these people.
Reprogram them, Kai.
You must.

And the funniest part is, the kind of sexy at hooters is only the kind of sexy a lower-middle class 40 year old man would enjoy.
Seriously? Tank tops and orange running shorts pulled up to the waist? Flesh toned tights? That’s not even sexy. That’s not risqué.
Hooters should just be fined for bad fashion choices.
Nothing sexier than a woman in running shorts with pantyhose, specially if they have real heavy eyeliner and some homemade tattoos.
Ha!
Who in hell takes their kids to Hooter in the first place?????
So this just now became a problem for the NAGs? Was it OK yesterday?
I’ll be damned, I agree with something you said! Hooters has been around for how many years???? And now it’s a problem? Also as the rest of you have brought up, who brings their kids to Hooters? I did see the Hooters GM on that TV show “Undercover Boss” and he states that Hooters is a family establishment.
I think Hooters is tragically lacking in class, but I also wouldn’t bring kids there so it’s not a big deal. I don’t think Hooters advertises with actual pictures of the girls and their boobs, so it’s really not super-visible to kids.
People should be more upset that the restaurant serves tasty buffalo sauce coated owl wings than the OMG BOOBEEZ. Owls help rid the planet of mice, and they can carry the plague. The plague is bad.
I hate it when I get the plague!
hi
Hooters rocks! Leave the kids at home if you dont want them to see! Or take them somewhere else! Thats my 2cents at least!! Keep up the good work girls!
