The Colour of a Woman’s Underwear Reveals What Type of Lover She Is?

A psychologist has this week revealed that the colour of a woman’s lingerie can apparently tell you what type of lover she is. Donna Dawson, a UK-based psychologist, has drawn up a list of colours, and what they say about the wearer, after a poll for laundry company Dr Beckmann found that almost three quarters of women surveyed said they now opted for ‘nude’ underwear – which apparently means they have ‘nothing to hide.’

This statistic, indicating that women are shunning traditional black or white or fancy sets of lingerie, would seem to be backed up by sales figures here in the UK – Debenhams this year reported a 38% year-on-year increase in their sales of nude underwear.

The Daily Mail yesterday suggested …

… that celebrities may be responsible for this change in lingerie tastes, citing Katy Perry’s Rolling Stone cover as an example of nude lingerie in the public eye – Perry appeared in a simple bra and pants, a real departure from her colourful on-stage ensembles. Another example that springs to mind is Eva Mendes recently revealing that she feels most sexy in ‘either nude or very basic underwear.’

Psychologist Dawson said that:

‘A nude or flesh-coloured bra denotes a personality that is natural, easy-going, down-to-earth and transparent. This woman is relaxed with nothing to hide.’

She went on to discuss other colours and their apparent meanings:

‘Colours at the warm end of the spectrum, created feelings of excitement and vitality, and can actually raise our blood pressure, heartbeat and breathing rate.’

According to Dawson, red underwear denotes a passionate, dramatic and driven woman who is not afraid to ask for what she wants. Pink denotes a romantic and gentle woman who is feminine and sensuous but would never take the lead. Black indicates an individual and powerful personality; a woman who is deeply passionate and sultry, whereas white denotes a woman who is innocent but also open to suggestion and a willing learner.

I’m not quite sure what to make of this ‘report’ – for one thing, there doesn’t seem to be any science in there, nor concrete findings. And if I were to have thought about what different colours of lingerie mean, I’d have probably come up with something similar. You know, white = innocent, red = sexy, pink = girly…

The other thing with this is that women wear different coloured lingerie all the time. Doing a little ‘research’ for this piece this morning (otherwise known as getting up and dressed for work), I had a little rifle round my lingerie drawer. In there I have black, white, flesh-tone (for wearing with white work shirts), purple, blue floral and green with a pink trim. I don’t think I’m unusual. Whilst I’m sure there are some women who stick to the same colour all the time, I think the majority will own several differently-coloured lingerie sets, to wear with different outfits or so that they can change depending on their mood – so how can a woman be defined by any one colour at any one point in time?

What do you guys make of these ‘findings?’ What colour undies are you wearing today, and what do you think they’re saying about you?!

  1. I’m gonna guess that the increase in flesh-toned undies has more to do with the current trendiness of thin sheer layering tee-shirts and less to do with women having fewer secrets.

  2. This stupid, wanna know why I own a few pieces of white underwear? Because I can wear them on my period and if they get bloodied I can toss them in bleach…no hidden meanings there.

Right now I’m wearing underwear that are white and black horizontal stripes on the back and black with white polka dots on the front, what does that mean other then they are funky looking?

  3. This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. I have underwear in all kinds of colors – black, tan, purple, red, pink, yellow, green; you name it, I have underwear in that color, except for white because I find it too boring and creepily virginal, but that’s a personal decision.

  4. I think there might be something to be said for colours telling you something – women who only wear nude are probably picking it for a reason, just as someone who only wears white. For someone who owns multiple, sometimes the one to pick on a given day is due to lines or other practical concerns, and sometimes it is due to mood. So I think there’s a little there, but you really couldn’t generalize to everyone.

I would love to see trends on this side of the Atlantic go towards the simple. The last place I went bra shopping, I was shown all kinds of ‘pretty’ things with lace and frills and trim and details. When I asked for plain, simple, patternless/laceless/textureless black, I was told they simply don’t have any. Not a one to be found that I could wear under a t-shirt or tank top without showing off.

  5. Oh my gosh, that is ridiculous. I don’t know any woman that has only one color of underwear. I have black, white, nude, navy, pink, green, beige, etc. What I wear on a given day has more to do with how well the underwear works with the outerwear that I have chosen for that day, though it is sometimes dictated by my period. One woman said that she wears white undies on her period so that she can just bleach stains out of them. I wear black undies on my period if I’m concerned that I might get a little leakage, so that they don’t show any stains.

  6. This is absolutely ridiculous. Who owns just one color of underwear?! Although I will admit that most of my underwear is “basic black”, I’ve also got blue, green, purple, yellow, and even one that is neon rainbow stripes… If I’m being judged by my underwear, then I’m going to have to go with sad, jealous, mysterious, happy, and rave child, because that’s obviously the only explanation. Or maybe it could also have something to do with the fact that, on a day to day basis, I’m wearing jeans and a black shirt (hence black underwear), and sometimes if I need a little pick-me-up, hell yeah I’ll toss on some undies that look like they just popped out of the 70′s to amuse myself! People are attributing too much to underwear color. What next? The color of my socks says how I’m feeling emotionally that day? Please… Maybe some people just love happy colored underwear!

  7. Oh, Wow! I must admit I have had so much fun reading these posts. LOL! What a riot. To think that someone (a WOMAN for cryin’ out loud) would come up with such a load of crap! I can go with wemon feeling different on different days, but I would say it matters more to most wemon what it is they are wearing over the undies then the undies themselves. I did, however, take a stroll through my undies drawer to see what I had, and I have a very mixed bag of undies. All colors, and rainbow colors, too. Since the article does not mention what this means, I guess I am with the girl who said that we must be bipolar!

  9. No your not Bipolar, you just like most girls out there, which is they love to experiement with clothing and colours- even when they don’t need something, they feel as though they have to have it or try it

  11. Nuts, I say. I find it hard to imagine there being a lot of validity to this poll. I think most well dressed women wear underwear fitting to their their outer garmets most of the time, especially when wearing white or light colored pants or skirt. no body wants to see a woman in white wearing pokadots or striped undies, of course I do agree that colors can bring out personalities in the bedroom, black – sultry, red- wild, hot to trot, pink – coy, skin- bland, white- innocent. I hate it when a womans bra doesn’t match her panties, nothing turns me off more, I think it so sexy when a woman pays particular ttention to detail.

  12. Bill, I can’t decide if you’re being sarcastic or not about the matching bra and panties. If you’re not….um. Yeah. Especially since women usually have like 4x the number of panties that they do bras. Or at least I do.

  13. What if I wear all different colors of panties? What does that mean – I am a wild & crazy lover of my man – YOu better believe it! Meow!

  14. Hmn, lets see, the pink unders I am wearing and a pair of pale green ones mean I am THRIFTY. I dont really like pink, but they were on mega-clearance when I walked through JC Pennys on my way to another store. My lime green & orange ones, the pink flowers with green lace and the multi-colored striped panties suggest that, uh, I am THRIFTY on sale at Target, they come in a pack of three, no choice of color. Same story with the lacy light blue, dark blue and black ones -THRIFTY clearance, package of three. SoI am a thrifty lover? Oh please!
This Donna Dawson psychologist chick is making stuff up with no scientific data to back it up. Suggesting that somehow these celebs are RESPONSIBLE for women buying more flesh-toned unders? Oh please. Dawson and the writer are stating opinion and speculation as though it is fact. Ridiculous.
Besides, looking at the Katy Perry Rolling Stone cover, I would call the bra and panties PINK, not nude.
    Silliness.

  15. Well I heard of some study about woman’s undies. It said that in the study woman admitted to wearing white undies meant that said women like anal more than vaginal don’t know if its true.somebody help me understand before I purchase as a gift some undies for a friend

  16. I’m sure many women own every color but does she wear every color and when? many women own darker colors but we know why…but I don’t c many wear a white thong or booty shorts just dark colors….Idk …just don’t want to buy my girl something she won’t wear or care to wear……
