14 year-old rap artist Astronomical Kid is tired of men staring lewdly at his mother and cat calling when she walks down the street. So tired, in fact, that he has made a music video for a new song called “Stop …
… Looking at my Moms.” Although the video is a couple of months old, it has just now garnered widespread attention. Kid, whose real name is Brian Bradley, said he thought it was inappropriate the way men would holler “Yo ma! What’s good?” at his mother:
“I didn’t like the way people were staring at my mother when I walked down the street. It was very offending.Every kid goes through that; every mother goes through that. Women, they are not pieces of meat. They are human beings. They should be respected. Men should know better.”
Bradley also added that he thought fighting back would be wrong: “I decided instead of being violent, and going about it the wrong way, I’d put it on a record.”
Astronomical Kid is apparently wise beyond his years and his mother, who asked not to be identified, is very proud of him. It is pretty amazing to me that someone so young already understands and is willing to challenge the sexism and misogyny in his community. The fact that he is doing it through hip hop (and being commercially successful to boot), a medium often criticized for its demeaning treatment of women as sex objects, is even more remarkable.
Perhaps this sort of activism will become more common, and the young generation will learn that it’s not okay to harass one another (especially intragender) and resort to violence when disagreements happen.

This kid is awesome.
I saw this last night on Hollerback. Thought it was pretty cool.
Nice message, but it will fall on death ears till men are taught a replacement way of interacting with women that works for them.
I would be really proud if he was my son!
Oh he’s so cute! And really talented! And the song sends a message, whichever way I look at it, I really like it.
