I truly think that Madonna is either a chameleon or a cat with nine lives. The woman is a master at reinventing herself, and doing so completely and without looking back. Oh yeah, and she always seems to succeed at what she does.
Her latest venture is a chain of fitness clubs, which will probably be as big as anything else she’s done in her remarkable career … because whether you love Madonna or hate her, you’ve got to give her credit for everything she’s been able to accomplish—channeling Marilyn Monroe in the early days of MTV, pop star, author, activist, and movie actress, to name a few.
It should come as no surprise that her latest act, similar to Susan Sarandon’s, is something that caters to the masses. Well, the rich masses.
“Our goal is to create an environment inspired by Madonna’s vision and high standards of what the ideal gym would be,” said Mark Mastrov, chairman of New Evolution Ventures (NEV), which is launching the clubs in partnership with the Material Girl and her manager Guy Oseary.
“Hard Candy Fitness will be a reflection of Madonna’s point of view and will reflect her input on every detail including music space, light and other design cues. Madonna’s touch will be everywhere,” Mastrov said.
The first “Hard Candy” club — named after the last album by the pop singer — will open in a 30,000 square foot space in the Mexican capital.
Don’t worry, Hard Candy Fitness will be more than just a high-class hangout with a juice bar and premier locker rooms … it’s evidently quite rigorous, featuring extensive cardiovascular equipment and classes ranging from yoga to capoeira.
To be fair to Madonna, she’s been a proponent of fitness throughout her time in the public eye. Her experiences at gyms all over the globe put her in a pretty good position to judge what would make one ideal.
I mean, this is the woman who had her first child with her personal trainer, Carlos Leon.
Madonna (who also goes by the informal version of her name, Mom) also has another project in the works.
Earlier this year, Madonna announced plans to launch, along with her teenage daughter Lourdes, a line of teen clothing called “Material Girl,” to be sold at Macy’s department stores.
I actually have tremendous respect for Madonna. She has pushed a hundred envelopes, opening doors for women in both the entertainment field and beyond. She’s also been true to herself, moving her career in directions that she felt was right and focus her philanthropy on areas of personal importance.
I think it’s a shame that many write her off as just a precursor to Lady Gaga.
So … is Madonna a ray of light or an opportunistic phony?

At 52 Madonna’s “Hard Candy” shtick conjures more images of the sweets found at the bottom of my grandma’s purse than any kind of sex appeal.
I used to sing “Papa Don’t Preach” at the karakoke bar,it was always a big hit. I love me some Madonna!
Boring, if you look half as good at 52 – you may consider yourself blessed.
Madonna is the biggest star on the planet and anybody who dismisses her talent or longevity is a fool. The woman is a force of nature.
And don’t get me started on the Lady Gaga comparisons. If Gaga has 60+ hits under her belt and is selling out arenas around the world 25 years from now, then we can talk. Until then, she’s just a poser.
Sorry to start a Lady Gaga debate, but just because she is similar to Madonna doesn’t mean she’s a poser.
It isn’t that Gaga is a poser, Erin – it is just very obvious to those of us who have been around since Madonna’s career started don’t see parallels, we see mirrors.
Nothing wrong with emulating someone who did it all so very well, is there?
I do enjoy Gaga’s music, I only hope that she evolves into a bit more than just a persona.
*that we don’t see parallels….

Any similarity on Gaga’s part to Madonna is entirely purposeful.
How are people still not getting who Gaga is?
The point of Gaga and her music is that it *is* pop culture. It pulls from hundreds of sources. What makes her an artist is her ability to create something new out of it all. She is far more self-reflexive than Madonna, that in of itself should cue people to the fact that she is definitively different. As with most 20th and 21st century artists, she plays with collage. It isn’t always entirely the content to be consumed at a base level, it is how that content is put together and to what purpose. If we needed to find a precursor for Madonna, I’m sure we could.
Not to mention, Gaga is actually incredibly talented in composition and execution. Many of Madonna’s songs were composed by an entirely different artist.
Madonna’s enduring success is the result of an intense drive and a work ethic rarely seen. She has enough money to live lavishly for the rest of life without working. Yet, she continues to workout for 2 hours a day; eat well, raise what seem to be well adjusted, educated, happy children; and sellout stadiums around the world.
No one has ever ascended to her hights of fame and fotrune without become a sad tragic story due to self destruction. For that alone, she is unique.
If there are any similarities between Gaga and Madonna, their hard work ethic seems to be the most similar.
