My teenaged cousins are obsessed with Axe body gel, spray, and deodorant, which I have always found bizarre. I think they think that it makes them smell like the kind of dudes that deliver the pizza in a porn flick, or that guy at a party who says things like “Was your daddy a thief? He must’ve been because he stole the stars from the sky and put them in your eyes.” It reeks of creepiness. Nothing spells out ‘douchebag’ quite like a guy dripping with the scent of Axe body wash from every orifice in his body.
So, yeah, it comes as no surprise to me that Axe’s newest ad campaign for, of …
… all things, Snake Wash, is highly offensive. Snake wash promises to “wash away the skank.” Wow. How extremely thought-provoking and eloquent. I am not sure if I can suppress my overwhelming need to raid my local drug store to buy every single Axe product they carry. Their wit and intellectual humor is ASTOUNDING!
Really? Snake wash? Washing away the skank? Did they come up with this campaign while doing keg stands at the local frat house? Are they hiring the male cast of the Jersey Shore to come up with this shit? Sadly, the same people who thought up the fabulous “Real Beauty” Dove campaign are also responsible for this atrociousness.
My suggestion? A soap that washes away slimy, sexist, morons. Or better yet, for a man that bathes himself in a perfumed body wash that tries to sell stuff by calling women skanks, repellent. The ads could say something like: “Growing tired of the creepy guy at working staring at your boobs, guys that use the term slut, whore, and skank, the co-worker that constantly makes inappropriate sexual advances? Then try our new sexist-idiot repellant proven to rid your life of terrible dudes.”

I actually LOVE the smell of Axe Vice.
*cough*
Were you also aware that “skank” can also be used to describe poor hygiene in anyone?
Just sayin…
I have never heard the word “skank” used in that manner. Usually, I just use it to refer to myself or one of my good friends when one of us does something of which I am especially proud.
Even if Axe IS attempting to get away with a “clever” play upon words, I doubt that the majority of people who see the advertisement will think of anything other than a “slut.” And, unlike my friends and I, most of these people probably (for whatever reason) associate negative connotations with the word “skank.”
I’ve heard of “stank,” but not “skank” as an adjective for stinkiness.
Yeah. Skank is pretty specific.
What we need now is a body wash for women designed to wash off the stank of “douchebag we fucked when we were so drunk we no longer had good judgment.”
Manda, If you look at the photo accompanying the phrase “wash away the skank,” It’s evident what they are implying.
*sigh* I guess some people are now going to have to learn the hard way that you can’t “wash away” the STD’s that come with random hookups. I think the larger issue here is that they’re trivializing that. No need for a condom, kids – just wash away the skank when you’re done!
I do not believe that the intention of the advertisement is to suggest that Axe can prevent the spread of STIs. Rather, the implication is that one can wash away the various fluids associated with sexual activity — which is true — and that one can cleanse oneself, on an emotional and perhaps spiritual level, of one’s recent bodily contact with a “skank.”
Now, that is a bit offensive. Also, the suggestion seems to be that, if a skank such as myself were to wash in it, I would cease to exist. So, not very appealing.
Classsssssy! Now I know why Axe sprays triggers a migraine for me.
I’ve never smelled one that wasn’t repulsive. But then, I find most perfuming products to be far more irritating than pleasant.
But look at their demographic – if was was trying to sell to axe customers, I would find this likely an effective tactic.
Evidently it does not work on you ladies, but if a hot guy is wearing Axe Vice . . . I might let him kill me if he wanted to. The smell turns me on that much.
