McDonalds now offers wedding packages. Yeah, you read that right. McDonalds. Weddings. McWeddings.
Hong Kong will, from the 1st January 2011, be the first city in the world to roll out McDonalds nuptial packages for couples. A unique way to ditch traditional wedding protocol, the package has all the details required to attract McDonalds-obsessive couples. This includes apple pie or cheeseburger wedding cakes, Happy Meal toy party favours for guests and, of course, catering by McDonalds. … family restaurants, so newlyweds will have to toast their marriage with, most probably, chocolate milkshake and Diet Coke.
Packages will cost around three thousand Hong Kong dollars (around £250), so the cost is minimal in the grand scheme of wedding planning. However, it is unlikely that couples will be able to book an entire restaurant for their wedding, meaning they may need to share with other, uninvited diners.
According to Helen Cheung, McDonalds Hong Kong’s Director of Corporate Communications and Relations, the idea of offering wedding packages came about when a couple who met and dated at McDonalds held their wedding party in one Hong Kong branch earlier this year. Cheung also told the South China Morning Post that:
‘Over the past two years we’ve received a number of calls from people who want to have their wedding part in our restaurants. There have been about 10 calls a month… We see it as a business opportunity.’
Many fast food chains have catered individual weddings in the past, as the majority are run as franchises. This includes Burger King and Taco Bell, two of the largest fast food chains in the US after McDonalds. But McDonalds Hong Kong is the first in the world to actively promote wedding services and cakes.
McDonalds wedding packages will be available from the 1st January at three Hong Kong McDonalds restaurants, though the chain have stated that they will consider expanding the service if there proves to be sufficient demand.
I can’t say I’d go for a McWedding myself, but if this is what a couple want then hell, why not? Would you like a wife with that?
