When I was 17, I was in love with a waifey track runner who was obsessed with Morrissey. As a result, I too — briefly — became a Morrissey fan with the hope of impressing him.
Despite all of that forced Morrissey listening, he ended up dating a round-faced senior who had a love of the Grateful Dead. What was learned from my foray into Morrissey fandom? Never feign musical interest to impress someone. It’s dumb and doesn’t work and most importantly one should always be themselves. Oh, and more importantly? Nothing.
I thought of my track-running crush when I heard about Morrissey’s recent ridiculous statement against the Chinese. Last week he announced to the Guardian Weekend:
“You can’t help but feel that the Chinese are a subspecies”
Morrissey is an animal rights activist. His comment was referring to the treatment of animals in China. While I think it’s great that he is passionate about a cause, I don’t think he should spout his brand of bigotry in the name of activism. His statement against the Chinese people is racist, stupid, and hurts his platform instead of helping it. Not that you ever really gave me much to go on to begin with, but not cool regardless, Morrissey!
I hate when people do this. Why make a mockery out of a terrific cause like animal rights by being a raging bigot? It’s so frustrating time and time again the way people get so blinded by their passion that they start projecting a distorted view of things upon others.
The animal rights cause is a terrific one, but yet now, because of one nut case like Morrissey, animal right activists are once again being given a bad name.
Morrissey, do us a favor and keep your racist views to yourself. Please don’t utter bigoted phrases in the name of animals, because frankly, no platform should support hate. While I realize that his horrible, misguided generalization of an entire nation was an attempt to raise awareness of the treatment of animals in China, it sadly got lost in his blatant assholery. Nice try Morrissey, but stick to making music — not political statements. While it works for some recording artists, you clearly can’t pull it off.

When I read the title of this post, I thought “Well, that can’t be the direct quote. There must be missing context”.
But then in reading the sentence in full, I’m not really sure what context could justify that sentence (can you provide a link so I can feel comfortable that I am not wrongfully passing judgement on the guy?).
But if the comment is as offensive as it sounds; Fuck Morrissey. That’s all we animal lovin’-vegetarian-animal rights folks need- one more idiot on a soap box filled with racism and stupidity, spouting off garbage and distracting from any real sort of argument.
Disgrasian and Angry Asian Man (among other Asian-American blogs) are pretty upset about it, and provide the links.

Being Asian, I suppose I should be more upset, but I never liked Morrissey all that much anyway, especially after “Irish Blood, English Heart,” but that’s because I favor Republicans over Unionists.
In 1971,I had a religious experience at a Dead concert. Everyone in the crowd looked like one of my immediate family, and there were thousands of people there. I walked up to a cop and asked him if he wanted some acid,he laughed. Man I miss those days!
Maybe he watched The Cove one too many times.
He must be a member of PETA. Because they care more putting BOOBIES! OMG NAKED BOOBIES!!1! in their ads to save the McNuggets than being legitimately effective.
wow. I love it when huge animal activists have more respect for animals than their fellow humans. That’s just great.
Well said.
I guess some people are still new to animal rights orgs
That is because too many humans are fuckwads.
Calling the Chinese a “subspecies” is idiotic. Humans of every ethnicity are capable of such acts against nature. People like this make animal activists look like morons.
Morrissey has always been a putz.
I’ve been reading about this all week, and I can’t say it surprised me even the teeniest bit. The man is an idiot.
