Katy Perry’s boobs have been censored from the ever-so-innocent eyes of Sesame Street’s young viewers. Yesterday, after the YouTube debut of Katy Perry’s ‘Hot ‘n Cold’ song duet with Elmo received harsh words from parents, the producers of the show decided to cut Katy’s appearance.
I get it, I do. While I am not at all offended by boobs, I can understand why some parents are. That’s just the way some people roll. I think it’s silly when clearly children aren’t going to notice; after all Elmo and other Muppets are nude, with the exception of Prairie Dawn …
… and Zoe, are they not? Sesame Street is like a little nude Muppet colony. The funny thing is, I see carpool moms showing much more boob then this while picking up their kids from school. That being said, it is a children’s show. If, in fact, Sesame Street producers are receiving scathing messages and e-mails from irate parents, I suppose I can’t fault them for removing the segment from their show.
But playing the Devil’s Advocate, I’m assuming that the Sesame Street people have a stylist or some form of wardrobe department. And keeping this in mind, I’m perplexed as to why they chose a cleavage-baring dress for Ms. Perry. If they don’t have a stylist, perhaps they could have made suggestion on what Katy should have worn. Sesame Street has been around for 30 years and has had countless celebrity guests — you would think that by now they’d have the whole guest appearance thing down. It’s well-documented that Americans are super-conservative about boobies, so why even risk outraging uptight parents? I think they could’ve used a larger dose of common sense in this situation, if, you know, they even remotely thought that something like this might occur.
So what do you guys think? Are you offended by cleavage on a kids show — this type of ‘cleavage’ at that?

I think her neckline is about 2 or 3 inches too low for Sesame Street.
With respect to the nudity of the Monsters on Sesame Street, they don’t actually have cleavage.
Katy Perry’s career has capitalized on her sexuality, and I have no problem with that. I don’t even think I’d have a problem with my kid watching her perform in this outfit.
But seriously, it’s Sesame Street. They should know better.
I agree. I was a bit surprised by how low the neckline was for Sesame Street. It’s certainly something that I wouldn’t be surprised or bothered by Katy wearing out and about in LA, but this is Sesame Street. It’s just a bit too low; even if it were 1 inch higher I think it would have been fine.
This dress is not provocative in the least. It is more like something I would expect to see at a prom. I wonder if this would be such an issue if she was flat… I think it should be more about the fashion than the amount of breast shown and the fashion here was fine.
Ridiculous. Boobs are everywhere these days, including the commercials these kids see. I didn’t even notice until I read about it. I think these moms are maybe a little jealous, Ms. Perry has a very nice figure.
This is not a commercial. It’s Sesame Street. And besides that, no, there are not women showing more cleavage than this in commercials that are aimed at small children. Your analogy sucks.
Also telling women they’re “jealous” when they disapprove of something provocative makes you sound like a 14 year old girl who’s been dragged onto the Maury Povich show.
I actually thought it was pretty cute, to be honest. The entire thing, really.
I agree. It is really cute.
I just think that when you’re performing on Sesame Street the neckline of your dress should not be closer to your nipples than the base of your neck.
Sarah, your such a naughty little tart!
I try, I try. ;)
Dude, please spell check your shiz before you post. “The funny thing is, I see carpool moms showing much more boob then this while picking up their kids from school.” It’s THAN not THEN. Also irrate is spelled with TWO Rs not ONE.
Erm, no, it is irate. Unless you mean irritate.
Go get em Erin. I hate spelling police (probably since I am so bad at it!)
lol i guess kb’s never heard the word irate before.
So I too did not notice boobage until it was pointed out to me, I thought it was super cute and fun for kids (and me apparently).
Agreed.

See any similarities?
She is playing dress up after all….
Thank you Wicked. I was trying to remember if any disney princesses had dresses like this. Tinkerbell is close enough!
I’m not offended by it, but I can see why some parents would be. Personally, I would have suggested she wear something about 2-3 inches higher, as well. There’s really no reason to show cleavage on Sesame Street.
On another note, that song bugs me. I normally like the guest spots on Sesame Street…but this song was a little irritating.
Sexualization of boobs… She’s showing more on the street than I would show breastfeeding- but I get dirty looks while she and others get ogled. :/
How dare I use my breasts for what they were intended??
Damn Jess, don’t get me going again. I don’t have the energy today to engage! How’s it going with the wee one? I think of you often for some reason and always send my best.
:D you are so sweet V! My bubba is doing great, he’s meeting 9 month milestones at 6 months! He cut 2 bottom teeth last month and he’s letting me sleep till 4 in the morning! He’s beautiful <3
If the children are old enough to care that they can see a hint of cleavage, then they are old enough to watch this video.
It’s dreadful that those parents get to take away this scene from everyone because they, themselves, cannot grow up.
From another angle ..I can see why this could be offensive…Its hard enough raising children in this world…trying to teach them to be self respecting… particularly girls. I could understand why a parent might dislike someone’s chest hanging out on a kids show…if you’re trying to teach girls that they more than their bodies or teaching boys that women aren’t just objects…
There was really no reason for her to be in a dress that scantily cut for a children’s show. I don’t mind it in any way, but I don’t understand it either. She could easily have had another couple inches covered, and the dress would look much the same, but better, and with no appropriateness issues.
I think it’s silly to freak out about it, but I’m not overly surprised.
I just wonder why the show’s producers didn’t object?
Really. I would have thought that after enough years of sesame street, they have a good sense of what parents will and will not like. but then, I suppose everyone screws up at times.

There are very few Sesame Street aged kids who will even notice the neckline. They don’t really pay attention to bodies at that age – they would be more focused on the veil, the brightness of the color (and the shininess) and her necklace.
If they were to notice anything physical, it would most likely be her eyes. I was the eldest of a gaggle of kids, and I don’t recall my Mom being pregnant with any of them – except the youngest. I was 10 when he was born. I look at pictures now and I see that my Mom was hugely pregnant. How the hell did I miss that?
The funny thing is, my kids have said the same thing to me.
This kind of points out that it is the PARENTS who are shook up about this. The kids are simply being denied what I feel is a really cute segment.
Such a shame.
For the record, you guys, SOME kids at those ages DO think about sex — even if they do not know what sex is and would have no idea what to do if they had the opportunity.
That said, the things that they would find sexually appealing would not come from a busty woman in her twenties. When I was four, my thoughts along those lines were inspired by some of the younger characters in Disney. So, if these kids are old enough to find Katy Perry sexually appealing, then . . . they are old enough to find her sexually appealing. I still do not see which children could be “harmed” by this.
I just heard somethig on TV saying that the producers of Sesame Street were surprised that this became an issue. They never saw the back lash coming.
Oh no! A pair of tits! People need to stop freaking out about her neckline in this clip, most mother’s I see at my job (grocery store) wear low cut clothing like that pretty often.
I love grocery shopping!
That is not a little cleavage, that is full-on side-boob. What were they high when they did this? I am pretty sure there was a nip-slip when she was running.
