Meet Bishop Eddie Long — Bentley driving pastor, mega church leader, and supposed believer that all gays go to hell.
Bishop Long has campaigned vehemently against gay marriage, even going so far as leading a march to Martin Luther King Jr’s grave to support amending the Declaration of Independence to add that marriage is to be between a man and a woman only. Also his church, New Birth Missionary Baptist Church located in Atlanta, Georgia, hosts those insane gay conversion classes.
Eddie Long has even been described by the Southern Poverty Law Centre as ”one of the most virulently homophobic black leaders in the religiously based anti-gay movement.”
Maybe that’s why the recent allegations against him are so unbelievably shocking, and if they are true — well, he will become …
… the biggest hypocrite, possibly, of all time.
The “Bishop” is being accused of all sorts of sexually seedy behavior by three young men that attended his church. One was as young as 17 and another just 18, when the supposed sexual interactions went on. Allegedly Long coerced the boys into performing oral sex and into masturbating in front him.
Supposedly there were overnight stays that involved all kinds of kinkiness—groping, kissing, and oral sex. It’s also being claimed that the Bishop performed ceremonies bounding the boys as his adopted sons. Not surprisingly, Long allegedly used bible verses to justify what transpired between him and the boys.
Oh, and Bishop Eddie Long is, of course, denying all claims.
Either way, it’s messed up story. If he did engage in sexual acts with young boys, shame on him — and if he didn’t, shame on the people that would make something like this up. But.
This isn’t the first controversey Long has been a part of. Back in 2005, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution accused Long of mishandling funds donated to his charity, Bishop Eddie Long Ministries Inc. From that charity, in 2005, he recived at least $3.07 million in salary. Long’s defense was that his charity did not solicit donations from his church’s members, but rather from book sales, speaking engagments, and other large donatations.
I’m not saying that “Bishop” Eddie Long isn’t a virtuous man — but I’m not saying that he is, either. And clearly there are others that feel the same way. What do you think will come out of this, if anything?

“… the biggest hypocrite, possibly, of all time.”
Maybe, depends on when he became a pedophile. Pedophiles often try to pick jobs where they can be trusted with young children. Saying things that support a trusting roll are just part of their gig.
17 year olds aren’t “young children.”
Justin Bieber is almost 17, but he looks 13 to me.
.
Ok ok, Your right Alzaetia, I just could not resist a Justin Bieber joke(I’ll feel guilty about it later).
The only one who should feel guilty about that joke is Justin Bieber…
How can you possibly doubt this man’s virtuosity?
He’s willing to give you a message of hope on your cell phone for free for 7 WHOLE DAYS!!
The man is obviously a giver.
It’s too bad that he’s such a homophobe,he’s got the perfect name to be a gay porn star!
I suspect the deepest homophobes are the most conflicted about their own desires. Doesn’t it seem like this happens a lot to the most outspoken Republican homophobes as well? Their overt, loud homophobia is just a cover for their own homosexuality.
Sure am glad I’m an independent, but I do have a woman’s shoe fetish.
I’ve always thought the same Erin.
“If I had a dollar for every homophobic politician or public figure that has been outed as gay I’d be able to open a mega-church version of the United Church of Bitchitude and Latter Day Drunks.” from Shark-fu of blog Angry Black Bitch.
.
Actually laughed out loud.
Actually I remember reading an article ages ago where an experiment was conducted on people identifying as straight. Half of them believed that homosexuality was wrong (‘homophobic’) and half did not (‘non-homophobic’). They were showed gay porn and even though ‘homophobic’ group reported less sexual arousal than the ‘non-homophobic’ group, the physiological measures showed them to be more sexually aroused. I really liked that article. But I can’t remember how many participants there were, or their gender, so I guess it could have been very unrepresentative.
Anyway, I agree, I think it is very possible that homophobic people may use it to try and cover their homosexuality. I can imagine how hard it must be, realising you are gay when you were raised/believe that homosexuality is wrong.
Found it!
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8772014
I heard about a study which compared self identified straight female and male responsiveness to sexuality in general. They showed videos of a man and woman having sex, two men having sex, two women having sex, and two monkeys having sex. Men were more likely to tune out from the beginning of the two men and the monkeys and not get aroused. Women found all of the videos stimulating- the act of sex was itself arousing, regardless of who was participating.
I think I’ve gone through the full circle of shock in regards to self-loathing homophobes. I used to find it interesting, then it became so common I found it boring, and now I’m just so surprised that it still happens because it just seems too cliche and last decade for the gays.
I dont wanna sound stupid but i have a question.. Is this homophobia craziness a part of being a baptist? I mean, i just dont know if it’s just this idiot and those crazies at westboro, or if it’s all baptists…
Wouldn’t it be great if it was the leader of the westboro church in a scandal like this? lol…… Sorry, that’s not funny…
I doubt it’s something that applies to all Baptists. I think it has more to do with the fact that most Baptist communities are in the Bible Belt South, so naturally they’re going to have Bible Belt views.
As a Baptist who’s family has been Baptist Ministers for the last 3 generations, let me say I am deeply offended by your anti-Baptist bigotry. Every religion has a few crazies, or have you forgotten the Protestant book-burners, the Catholic boy-touchers or the Islamic bombers? In short KISS MY ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m a follower of Mommaism, you be good to momma, momma be good to you!
On the one hand, it does seem that he who doth protest too much tends to be the closet gay. I’m from the state of the Larry Craig bathroom incident. Sidenote: people STILL visit that bathroom in the airport to take pictures.
On the other hand, these young men were close enough to this bishop to know that allegations of homosexual impropriety would be the most devastating to his image, and would make great extortion material. I am not doubting their victimhood, just pointing out that they could easily have motive to want more money from the man, and they know how to hit him where it hurts. Guess this is what he gets for being such an easy target and hating on the gays.
I hope the media circus around this doesn’t blow up so much that it obscures the real facts as they come out, and I hope that nobody allows this guy to do a cover up job to save his public image if this stuff is true. I’m very interested to see what happens. Hopefully the bigot will realize how stupid his anti-gay platform is through this experience.
Am I the only one who caught that he wants to “amend the Declaration of Independence”? Ummmmm, does he want to tell Britain to keep the gays there, or what? Because, as far as I’m aware, the only US Gov’t document that can be amended is the Constitution. That little snipet had me more confounded than the whole closet gay thing. Anymore, those who protest the most with the most inane reasoning are the closet gays, and it’s not surprising at all.
Yeah. I wasn’t bothering with this one, but that’s what caught me too. Rather amusing to want to amend the declaration of independence – which aside from being a nice document, has absolutely no bearing..
Is this cat gay? Maybe, but what gets me is the fact that being gay is one of those “perfect” accusations. Easy to say but almost impossable to disprove. I mean how do you prove what is or is not going on in your head?
[...] a weekend interview with three young members of Bishop Eddie Long’s congregation, CNN reporter, Don Lemon spoke up about his experience of being sexually assaulted as [...]
Speechless. Yet another case of an anti-homosexual zealot doing it with blokes himself, like Roy Ashburn (US anti-gay senator who eventually outed himself as gay) and George Rekers (anti-gay religious campaigner caught holidaying with a male sex worker). No smoke without fire.
These preachers send young gays to self inflicted deaths with the self hatred they invoke, and sometimes to death or grievous bodily harm at the hands of gaybashers doing “God’s work”.
Of course these allegations against Long are just that, and have yet to be tested legally, moreover there is no pedophile component involved. It could be that Long is a victim of opportunistic accusation by down and out youths with an eye on the victim’s compensation money, or a cash settlement such as happened in the Michael Jackson scandal. However with all this accumulating evidence, I am more and more coming to the view that practically all homophobia connotes closet homosexuality in some way. Truly straight men are too busy chasing women to worry about what gays are up to.
Long’s sermons promoting personal wealth definitely conflict with Christ’s unmistakable statement, “It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of Heaven.” Maybe Long keeps a small camel and a large needle as workarounds. That said, I think he is right to encourage impoverished blacks to improve their lot in life, just a shame about all the other freakin’ baggage.
Whether or not he is homosexual, now is the time to repudiate every homophobic sentence he ever wrote or uttered, for the good of all humanity, gay and straight.
